About The Position

The Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Guelph is seeking a Teaching Support Instructor Technician to support the design, coordination, and delivery of undergraduate and graduate courses across laboratory, field, online, and experiential learning environments. This full-time position plays a critical role in ensuring high-quality teaching and learning experiences while working collaboratively with faculty, teaching assistants, students, and departmental staff. The Department of Integrative Biology offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate courses delivered on campus, in field settings, and through distance education. The successful candidate will collaborate with faculty members in the design and delivery of laboratory, field, online, and experiential components of courses as well as support new initiatives in course-based master’s programs including biodiversity and ecosystem science, and bioinformatics. Responsibilities include coordinating, delivering and continuously improving undergraduate and graduate teaching activities. This may include developing and delivering instructional materials and assessments, facilitating online discussions, supporting teaching teams, and contributing to curriculum and program development and innovation. The position reports to the Department Chair, with functional reporting to the Administrative Officer.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Biology or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in physiology, ecology, and/or evolutionary biology.
  • Minimum of one year of relevant experience in designing and teaching university-level courses in physiology, ecology, evolutionary biology, or related areas.
  • Experience developing and delivering instructional materials in laboratory, field, and/or online learning environments.
  • Experience training and supervising teaching assistants and working collaboratively with students, faculty, and academic staff.
  • Strong teaching, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Expertise in field biology techniques and laboratory safety practices.
  • Knowledge of biological principles, scientific method, analytical methods, laboratory procedures, and field-based instruction.
  • Proficiency with common software applications and online learning platforms, including Microsoft Office 365 and CourseLink/Desire2Learn.
  • Familiarity with the post-secondary academic environment and university policies and procedures.
  • Valid Ontario G driver's licence.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, coordinate, and deliver undergraduate and graduate course content.
  • Prepare and maintain laboratory and field teaching activities and equipment.
  • Develop assignments, assessments, and experiential learning opportunities.
  • Evaluate and revise course content to align with curriculum objectives and learning outcomes.
  • Support teaching in face-to-face, field-based, and online learning environments.
  • Train and mentor graduate teaching assistants, undergraduate volunteers, and volunteers.
  • Provide guidance on teaching delivery, grading, laboratory procedures, and safety practices.
  • Support student development and provide mentorship related to academic and career pathways.
  • Participate on departmental committees and working groups such as health and safety activities, curriculum initiatives, hiring processes, and other departmental priorities.
  • Support specialized departmental functions and training activities.
  • Participate in outreach and recruitment events.
  • Support educational programs for schools, community groups, and external partners.
  • Coordinate workshops and engagement activities that promote biological sciences education.
