Excel Academy Charter Schools•Providence, RI

About The Position

The Excel Academy Teaching Fellowship is a year-long intensive teacher development program. During the first half of the school year, Fellows develop classroom culture and management skills; during the second half, they focus on content and lesson instruction. Fellows build their practice through classroom observations, student support, instructional practice in varied settings, weekly coaching meetings with an experienced Mentor Teacher, classroom coverage for absent teachers, and other development opportunities. They also attend bi-weekly professional development sessions on topics such as active circulation, clarity of academic instruction, standards-based learning, lesson internalization, and feedback. The position combines teaching opportunities, operational support, and professional development. Fellows co-teach and lead classes, plan lessons and units with Mentor Teachers, substitute teach across grades 5–12 and subject areas, and contribute to homeroom, advisory, grade-level, and enrichment activities. Fellows also provide 10–15 hours per week of operational support as requested. At the end of the fellowship, Fellows may apply for a lead teaching position for the following school year and, as current employees, are guaranteed an interview. High-performing Fellows may be asked to cover parental leave or apply for a mid-year lead opening; compensation increases to a full teacher salary during such coverage.
