About The Position

The Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applications for up to seven open positions of Teaching Faculty with Open Rank. Rank (I, II, III) will be determined by the teaching experience indicated at the time of the application. The initial appointment will be for one academic year with the future possibility of rolling multi-year contracts. The appointment will start August 24, 2026. Candidates should have experience teaching one or more of the following: first-year composition; technical, professional, business writing; advanced composition, basic writing, and/or English as a Second Language. Applicants should be prepared to teach up to four sections each semester. The Department of English is a large, complex, vibrant, and productive workplace. It consists of thirty-four faculty, twenty-seven academic staff, three administrative members, and a hundred twenty-six graduate students. It is also an extremely productive research-oriented department with a strong commitment to academic excellence. The individual in this position functions in a highly professional capacity for the department. Requirements

  • MA or MFA in English or related field
  • 2 years of experience teaching in one of the areas listed above, with evidence of teaching effectiveness

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in English or related field
  • MA TESOL, TESOL certificate, or experience teaching multilingual writers
  • Experience teaching developmental reading or Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW)
  • Experience with Critical AI Literacy or related approaches to teaching composition
  • Additional years of experience teaching in any of the areas listed above
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence.
  • Experience teaching in Access-Oriented Institutions (AOIs)

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the day to day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy
  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Assists in developing techniques and/or model programs for carrying out instructional goals in disciplinary area and may help identify ways in which new techniques could be of assistance
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
