About The Position

The Arc of Ocean County is seeking an enthusiastic and dependable Teaching Assistant to support students participating in our Summer Transition Program for youth who are blind or visually impaired. Working alongside instructional and program staff, the Teaching Assistant helps create an engaging learning environment where students can strengthen academic, social, vocational, and independent living skills. This role is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in education, accessibility services, human services, or disability support who are passionate about helping young adults prepare for college, employment, and independent living.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Candidates pursuing a degree in Special Education, Visual Impairment Studies, Education, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Previous experience working with transition-aged youth, students with disabilities, or young adults preferred.
  • Valid New Jersey driver's license required, with no more than five (5) points.
  • Must successfully complete all required background screenings, including criminal history checks, Central Registry checks, CARI screenings, and applicable drug testing requirements.
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Commitment to fostering independence, self-confidence, self-advocacy, and personal growth among students.

Responsibilities

  • Assist instructors with implementing classroom lessons, group activities, and experiential learning opportunities both on campus and in community settings.
  • Provide individualized and small-group support to students during educational and skill-building activities.
  • Encourage the development of academic, career readiness, social, and independent living skills.
  • Support students in utilizing assistive technology, Braille resources, screen readers, and other accessible learning tools.
  • Assist with employment preparation activities including résumé writing, interview practice, workplace communication, and professional behavior development.
  • Help create, modify, and organize accessible instructional materials, including large-print documents, Braille resources, tactile graphics, and digital content.
  • Provide guidance and supervision during campus navigation, community outings, and transportation activities.
  • Assist program staff with tracking student participation, engagement, and progress throughout the program.
  • Collaborate effectively with instructors, supervisors, families, and community partners to support positive student experiences and outcomes.
  • Attend required trainings, staff meetings, and other program-related activities.
