Teaching Assistant (TA)
About The Position
The Teaching Assistant will support IHFL's after-school programming in Newark by assisting educators in delivering hands-on lessons in food literacy, health education, and environmental sustainability for students in grades 4–8. Working Monday through Friday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, TAs will help manage gardens, teaching kitchens, and indoor farming labs while fostering student engagement and maintaining program operations. Ideal candidates have experience working with youth, an interest in health and sustainability, and a commitment to supporting diverse urban communities. This is an opportunity to contribute your expertise to an innovative pilot program working to transform health outcomes in Newark communities through education and engagement. The ideal candidate will be passionate about community nutrition education and creating lasting positive change in urban communities.
Requirements
- High school diploma required
- Experience working with youth in educational or after-school settings
- Interest in food systems, health education, or environmental sustainability
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Flexible schedule to accommodate evening hours (11:00 AM - 8:00 PM)
- Available to work two weekend days per month for community events
- Comfortable with physical aspects of garden and kitchen work
- Willing to learn and grow with an evolving pilot program
- Comfort with ambiguity and ability to create structure in a startup environment
- Passionate commitment to the mission of creating lasting change in underserved communities
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor's degree or current enrollment in education, environmental science, or related field preferred
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
Responsibilities
- Assist educators with daily lesson preparation and implementation
- Help manage indoor farming systems and garden spaces
- Support cooking demonstrations and nutrition activities
- Maintain equipment and supplies for hands-on learning
- Assist with student supervision during program hours
- Provide one-on-one and small group support to students
- Help create an inclusive and positive learning environment
- Support student documentation and progress tracking
- Assist with behavior management
- Help students develop skills in gardening, cooking, and environmental stewardship
- Prepare materials and spaces for daily activities
- Assist with facility maintenance and organization
- Support bi-monthly weekend community events
- Help maintain safety protocols and procedures
- Assist with data collection for program evaluation
