About The Position

This job advertisement is to fill an existing vacancy for a Teaching Assistant (TA) position for the course PSYC 4P60, Psychology of Bilingualism, for the Winter D3-1 term at Brock University. The nominal workload for this position is either 120 or 180 hours per half credit course appointment. Ordinarily, teaching assistants will lead either 2 seminars, in the case of a 120-hour appointment, or 3 seminars in the case of a 180-hour appointment. Duties and responsibilities will be in accordance with Article 22 of the Collective Agreement and may include attending lectures and TA meetings, preparing seminar materials, proctoring and grading assignments, tests, and examinations, holding office hours, answering student emails, maintaining accurate records, and helping students overcome difficulties with course material. The position requires flexibility to present material and conduct seminars remotely, and to maintain contact with the instructor, fellow TAs, and students via various communication methods. Requirements

  • Must have completed or be enrolled in PSYC 5Y51/52/61/62/71/72 or PSYC 7Y51/52/53/61/62/63/71/72/73, or 5F01, within the previous five years; OR Minimum 3rd Year complete and currently enrolled in a PSYC BA or BSc program, with an average of at least 80; and have taken this course within the previous five years, and achieved a grade of at least 80. Previous successful experience as a TA in this course in an academic setting will be considered as equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate a clear and thorough understanding of all aspects of the course to clearly explain all course topics
  • Must have strong writing and editing skills and a thorough understanding of APA writing style
  • Must have excellent oral communication skills
  • Must have the interpersonal qualities to be supportive of students and effective in leading group discussion
  • Must have strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to keep accurate records/manage data
  • Must have excellent time management skills in order to cover the required course material during the available seminar/lab or tutorial time
  • Must be adept at providing feedback to students in a constructive manner
  • Must be able and willing to present material/conduct seminars remotely
  • Must be able and willing to maintain contact with the instructor, fellow teaching assistants and enrolled students by email and by audio-video conferencing and/or in-person meetings and to conduct seminars and office hours via audio-video conferencing and/or in-person meetings
