About The Position

Brock University is seeking a Teaching Assistant for the PSYC 4P55 course, Neural Mechanisms, Hormones & Behaviour, for the Winter term. This position is part of the CUPE4207-1 Employee Group. The role involves supporting the instructor and students in the course, which may include leading seminars, proctoring and grading assignments, holding office hours, and assisting students with course material. The workload is typically 120 or 180 hours per half credit course appointment, depending on the number of seminars led. Compensation is based on the employee's qualifications, with rates effective September 1, 2026.

Requirements

  • Must have completed or be enrolled in PSYC 5Y51/52/61/62/71/72 or PSYC 7Y51/52/53/61/62/63/71/72/73, or 5F01, within the previous five years; OR Minimum 3rd Year complete and currently enrolled in a PSYC BA or BSc program, with an average of at least 80; and have taken this course within the previous five years, and achieved a grade of at least 80.
  • Previous successful experience as a TA in this course in an academic setting will be considered as equivalent.
  • Must demonstrate a clear and thorough understanding of all aspects of the course to clearly explain all course topics
  • Must have strong writing and editing skills and a thorough understanding of APA writing style
  • Must have excellent oral communication skills
  • Must have the interpersonal qualities to be supportive of students and effective in leading group discussion
  • Must have strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to keep accurate records/manage data
  • Must have excellent time management skills in order to cover the required course material during the available seminar/lab or tutorial time
  • Must be adept at providing feedback to students in a constructive manner
  • Must be able and willing to present material/conduct seminars remotely.
  • Must be able and willing to maintain contact with the instructor, fellow teaching assistants and enrolled students by email and by audio-video conferencing and/or in-person meetings and to conduct seminars and office hours via audio-video conferencing and/or in-person meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Attending lectures as scheduled
  • Attending TA meetings as scheduled
  • Preparation of seminar materials
  • Proctoring and grading assignments, tests and examinations in a timely manner, and providing supportive and instructive written feedback
  • Holding office hours and answering student emails outside of scheduled student contact time
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Helping students overcome difficulties that they may encounter when dealing with course material
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Instructor
