About The Position

Honour Secondary School (HSS) is an independent secondary school in Surrey serving youth in Grades 10–12 who benefit from an alternative educational setting. HSS offers a comprehensive academic program within a small, supportive learning environment that emphasizes individualized instruction, flexibility, and strong relationships. The program is designed to create a safe, engaging space where students can re‑engage with their education, build academic confidence, and develop positive skills and behaviours that support long‑term success. HSS also provides targeted support to address barriers to learning and works collaboratively with justice, community, and partners to support student stability and positive educational outcomes. The Teacher will work with school staff and lead the academic and curriculum implementation for our students. Working in collaboration with the Principal, the Teacher will develop curriculum for Grades 10-12 that meets or exceeds Ministry of Education standards and guidelines. They will deliver the curriculum in innovative ways that includes creative community-based learning activities for a specialized student population. In collaboration with the program leadership and Principal, the Teacher will establish and maintain a safe and nurturing environment for staff and students and support the supervision of staff and volunteers. The Teacher is responsible for maintaining proper program records, including report cards, providing program evaluation input, and supporting the team with inspection and audit requirements. In accordance with the Independent School Act, the teacher will create, and maintain Individual Education Plans (IEPs), and communicate these to the Ministry of Education.

Requirements

  • B.C. Teaching Certificate (Certificate of Qualification)
  • Ability to teach and support student learning in core subjects for grades 10-12
  • Ability to teach multiple subjects
  • Awareness of issues surrounding inner-city education and diversity

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements the curriculum for Grades 10-12 that meets or exceeds Ministry of Education standards and guidelines
  • Delivers the curriculum in innovative ways to a specialized student population
  • Collaborates with the program leadership and Principal on innovative community-based learning activities for students to bring their learning into the real world
  • Maintains proper program records, including report cards
  • Ensures completion and remittance of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to the Ministry of Education as required and prior to deadline
  • Adheres to the Independent School Act
  • Collaborates with the program leaders and Principal to provide leadership and support to staff and volunteers
  • Establishes and maintains a safe and nurturing environment for staff and students
  • Provides program evaluation input, leading inspections and audits
  • Communicates with the Ministry of Education with full reporting requirements
  • Communicates with and/or supports a collaborative relationship with FISA, the Ministry of Education and other Independent Schools and Authorities
