The Teacher, Special Education, is responsible for providing instruction to students with special needs and will maintain required paperwork at federal, State, and local levels. This role involves instructing students in subject matter using various teaching methods, audiovisual aids, and supplementary materials. The teacher will prepare lessons, assign work, correct assignments, and keep accurate attendance records. Maintaining classroom discipline, administering tests to evaluate progress, and reporting student progress to parents are key aspects of the role. The position also requires participation in faculty meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops, as well as encouraging appropriate classroom behavior and preparing for class. The teacher will be available for parent and student meetings outside of instructional hours when requested, assist in enforcing school rules, and meet classes at designated times and locations. Representing the school positively to the community and adhering to the Hawkins County Schools’ Employee Code of Conduct are also expected. The role requires adaptability in performing various duties, accepting responsibility for direction and control, dealing with students, making generalizations and decisions, understanding instructions and principles, reasoning, making judgments, understanding word meanings, performing arithmetic operations, and having good manual dexterity for fine motor skills. Strong writing, speaking, and human relations skills are essential. Coaching is available for qualified candidates. The position requires meeting necessary health and physical qualifications and completing satisfactory background checks as required by the Tennessee State Department of Education and State Law. The teacher will perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor and/or principal or his designee. The usual job demands heavy lifting over 60 lbs., occasionally (over 15% and up to 40 % of the time) within the classroom environment. Other physical demands include pushing, pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, hearing, seeing, and assisting in lifting students who need extra help with their physical needs.
