About The Position

The Teacher, Special Education, is responsible for providing instruction to students with special needs and will maintain required paperwork at federal, State, and local levels. This role involves instructing students in subject matter using various teaching methods, audiovisual aids, and supplementary materials. The teacher will prepare lessons, assign work, correct assignments, and keep accurate attendance records. Maintaining classroom discipline, administering tests to evaluate progress, and reporting to parents are key aspects of the role. The position also requires participation in faculty meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops, as well as encouraging appropriate student behavior and preparing for class. The teacher will be available for education-related meetings with students and parents outside of instructional hours and will assist in enforcing school rules and policies. This role meets and instructs assigned classes at designated times and locations, represents the school positively to the community, and adheres to the Hawkins County Schools’ Employee Code of Conduct. Adaptability to various duties, accepting responsibility, dealing with students, making judgments, understanding instructions, reasoning, and performing arithmetic operations are essential. Strong writing, speaking, and human relations skills are required. Coaching is available for qualified candidates. The role also requires meeting necessary health and physical qualifications and completing satisfactory background checks.

Requirements

  • Hold a valid teacher’s license with Special Education endorsement
  • Demonstrate English proficiency in oral and written English.
  • The ability to understand instructions and underlying principles.
  • Ability to reason and make judgments.
  • Ability to understand meanings of words and the ideas associated with them.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to move the hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers.
  • To make visual comparisons and discriminations and see slight differences in shapes and shadings of figures.
  • Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.
  • Possess strong writing, speaking, and human relations skills.
  • Meet the necessary health and physical qualifications.
  • Complete satisfactory background checks as required by the Tennessee State Department of Education and State Law.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs students in subject matter, using various teaching methods, such as lecture and demonstration.
  • Uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentation.
  • Prepares to teach course of study, assigns lessons, and corrects homework papers corresponding to the course of study.
  • Keeps accurate attendance records.
  • Maintains discipline in the classroom and on school grounds.
  • Administers tests to evaluate progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of student progress.
  • Participates in faculty and department meetings, educational conferences, and appropriate teacher training workshops.
  • Encourages students to maintain appropriate standards of classroom behavior.
  • Prepares for class and presents evidence of preparation when requested by immediate supervisor.
  • Maintains availability to students and parents for education-related meetings outside the instructional day when requested.
  • Assists in enforcing school rules, Board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at times designated.
  • Represents the school to the community in a positive manner.
  • Adheres to the Hawkins County Schools’ Employee Code of Conduct.
