About The Position

The Science Teacher is a classroom teacher responsible for providing high-quality instruction that promotes student achievement and growth in science. The teacher develops and delivers standards-based instruction aligned with the West Virginia College- and Career-Readiness Standards, creates and maintains a safe and engaging learning environment, and supports students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development. The teacher may be assigned to teach science courses consistent with the employee's certification and the instructional needs of Pocahontas County Schools. The Science Teacher performs duties consistent with the expectations of a professional educator as defined by West Virginia Code, West Virginia Board of Education policy, and Pocahontas County Board of Education policy.

Requirements

• Valid West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate with endorsement(s) in Science, including but not limited to General Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, or other science endorsements appropriate to the assigned teaching duties.
• Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18A-3-10
• Applicants who have recent unsatisfactory evaluations will not be considered eligible for consideration
• Applicants who demonstrate unsatisfactory interview performance are not eligible for consideration
• Applicants who receive unfavorable reference recommendations will not be eligible for consideration.
• Applicants who have been dismissed or who have had their contracts non-renewed for cause by another school district are not eligible for consideration.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates current and thorough knowledge of assigned content, curriculum, instructional best practices, and applicable state standards.
• Understands how students learn and develops instruction appropriate to various developmental levels.
• Develops and implements engaging, standards-based instruction that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, student engagement, and the application of learning.
• Selects appropriate instructional resources, technology, and learning experiences to support student achievement.
• Designs and implements formative and summative assessments aligned with learning objectives.
• Uses assessment data to monitor progress, provide feedback, and inform instructional decisions.
• Demonstrates knowledge of students' individual strengths, interests, learning styles, cultural backgrounds, and academic needs to provide differentiated instruction and appropriate accommodations or modifications.
• Establishes positive relationships with students and creates a safe, respectful, and supportive learning environment conducive to academic success and scientific exploration.
• Maintains clear expectations and procedures that promote responsible behavior, student engagement, and a productive learning environment.
• Maintains an organized classroom environment that supports learning, ensures accessibility of materials, and complies with all safety regulations and procedures.
• Implements and enforces appropriate safety procedures consistent with district, state, and federal guidelines.
• Utilizes a variety of evidence-based instructional strategies, learning experiences, and appropriate technologies to engage students in meaningful learning.
• Provides accurate, coherent, and effective instruction with clear expectations and directions.
• Uses questioning, discussion, and active listening techniques to support student understanding.
• Offers specific, constructive, and timely feedback to students regarding academic performance and progress toward learning goals.
• Adjusts instructional methods, pacing, and resources to meet student needs and respond to assessment results and classroom dynamics.
• Continuously evaluates instructional effectiveness and student outcomes to improve teaching practices and student achievement.
• Works cooperatively with administrators, teachers, counselors, interventionists, special education personnel, and other staff to support student success and school improvement initiatives.
• Maintains regular, professional communication with parents and guardians regarding academic progress, student needs, and classroom activities.
• Contributes positively to the school culture through attendance at meetings, participation in committees, supervision duties, extracurricular activities, and other assigned responsibilities.
• Adheres to West Virginia Code, WVBE policies, county policies, ethical standards, and professional expectations.
• Maintains confidentiality and demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and sound professional judgment.
• Participates in ongoing professional learning to maintain content knowledge, instructional effectiveness, technology skills, and awareness of current educational research and practices.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to implement accommodations, interventions, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), Section 504 plans, and other support services as appropriate.
• Provides appropriate supervision of students during instructional and non-instructional periods, school activities, field experiences, and other assigned settings to promote student safety and well-being.
• Supports student engagement through participation in extracurricular activities, student organizations, academic competitions, and other school-sponsored programs as assigned.
• Carries out other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Superintendent, or designee in support of the educational mission of Pocahontas County Schools.
