About The Position

This role involves exercising general and particular professional duties as a teacher in a school, under the direction of the Principal. Key responsibilities include planning and preparing courses and lessons, teaching pupils according to their educational needs, assessing, recording, and reporting on pupil progress, promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils, providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, communicating with parents and external bodies, and participating in meetings. The role also requires maintaining good order and discipline, safeguarding health and safety, preparing pupils for public examinations, and contributing to the review, development, and management of school activities. Teachers are expected to work 195 days a year, with no more than 190 days involving classroom teaching, and be available for 1,265 hours annually (exclusive of time spent off-premises for preparation and travel). Specific teaching hours per week are capped at 25 for primary/special schools and 23.5 for secondary schools. The job description is subject to review and may include other similar duties. The post-holder is expected to promote good relations, equality of opportunity, and comply with equality legislation.

Requirements

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach Mathematics in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification which has prepared the applicant to teach Mathematics as his/her main subject.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching Mathematics at Key Stage 3 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
  • Knowledge of Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of pupils.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools/media and the use of tablets/mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils to raise achievement.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team, and to motivate self and others.
  • Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the School’s Values/ethos.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons.

  • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing them for these purposes.
  • Recording and reporting on pupil assessments for public examinations.
  • Participating in arrangements for pupils' presentation for and supervision during public examinations.
  • Contributing to the selection and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
  • Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
  • Taking part in the review, development, and management of curriculum, organisation, and pastoral functions of the school.
  • Participating in administrative and organisational tasks, including managing support staff and ordering/allocating equipment and materials.
  • Attending assemblies.
  • Registering pupil attendance and supervising pupils before, during, or after school sessions.
  • Supervising and teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available, subject to specific conditions regarding school size and duration of absence.
