About The Position

Holyoke Public Schools is seeking a Dual Language Elementary Teacher for Spanish, grades 1-6. The district currently has three Dual Language Programs housed at Joseph Metcalf School, E.N. White School, and Kelly School. These programs were established to help students become fluent speakers, readers, and writers of both English and Spanish, achieving bilingual and biliterate status while meeting grade-level standards in both languages. The program aims to foster friendships across cultures and promote biculturalism through a 50/50 two-way immersion model where students learn half the day in English and half in Spanish. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Ability to instruct fully in Spanish
  • A strong understanding of second language acquisition
  • Commitment to ensuring academic, social emotional, and cultural competence success for all students

Responsibilities

  • Understand the core purposes of dual language immersion programs and their effectiveness.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated locations and times.
  • Plan a program of study that meets individual student needs, interests, and abilities, using a variety of instructional techniques and media.
  • Teach reading, writing, social studies, and mathematics according to Massachusetts Curriculum Standards and the district’s instructional focus.
  • Collaborate with a peer teacher to ensure continuity between daily Spanish and English instruction.
  • Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for student maturity and interests.
  • Instruct students using strategies that support language development, such as sheltered instruction, cooperative learning, and inquiry-based learning.
  • Guide the learning process towards curriculum goals, establishing and communicating clear objectives for all lessons.
  • Implement the district’s philosophy of education, instructional goals, and objectives through instruction and action.
  • Regularly assess student accomplishments and provide progress reports.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and district policy.
  • Be available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when needed.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aides and volunteers, and evaluate their job performance.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal/district leader.
