Teacher Assistant
About The Position
The Teacher Assistant supports implementation of programming for an assigned group of children, monitors each child’s participation, and consults with the Lead Teacher to adjust programming to maximize children’s enjoyment. The role includes providing daily care and supervision, communicating with families about children’s activities and development, and working with the Lead Teacher, Site Director, and co-workers to deliver services effectively. The assistant also helps maintain a clean, organized, and inviting classroom and follows applicable organizational policies and regulatory guidelines.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completed Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, or willingness to complete it within the first year of employment.
- Foundations in Health and Safety Certificate, or willingness to complete the training within the first week of hire.
- One year of experience working with children.
- Ability to provide routine daily care and supervise children by sight and sound.
- Ability to react quickly to safety concerns in an emergency.
- Flexibility to take varied assignments and direction from others.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications, or willingness to complete them within the first year.
- Positive attitude and ability to work as part of a team toward Generations’ mission and goals.

Responsibilities
- Provide competent supervision and daily care to all children in the assigned classroom.
- Assist with implementing activities and experiences within the group and provide assessment information about planned programming when requested.
- Use techniques such as modeling, observing, demonstrating, open-ended questioning, and reinforcement when conducting activities.
- Ensure activities are carried out safely, efficiently, and in a motivating manner.
- Guide children positively through positive language, reinforcement, and redirection.
- Consult with the Lead Teacher and supervisors as needed to ensure behavior plans are followed and actions are completed.
- Prepare alternative activities when planned activities cannot proceed or are unsuccessful, adapting flexibly to circumstances.
- Help keep the classroom clean, neat, organized, and inviting to children and families.
- Use appropriate language and tone with children, promote self-esteem and self-help skills, and show warmth and affection.
- Promote the daily exchange of information about children’s activities with families and maintain confidentiality when discussing children.
- Maintain a cooperative team approach and communicate with families, co-workers, and supervisors about the care and development of children.
- Participate in workshops and training as appropriate; the annual 30-hour training requirement is prorated for seasonal employees, though full compliance is recommended for all.
- Stay current with Generations policies, OCFS regulations, National Accreditation guidelines, and other applicable requirements, including CACFP and Health Department requirements.
- Write correspondence and records related to programming, accidents, illnesses, medication administration, and other pertinent information.
