About The Position

The Ohio Department of Youth Services (DYS) is seeking a Teacher 1 (Special Education - Intervention Specialist) to provide individualized instruction to students at the Circleville Juvenile Correctional Facility (CJCF) Ralph Starsky High School. This role involves assessing educational needs, developing and implementing lesson plans, teaching academic and career-tech subjects, and supporting students in various life skills. DYS is committed to improving Ohio's future by habilitating youth and empowering families and communities, aiming to provide all youth with an opportunity to reach their greatest potential. Staff are considered the greatest resource in this mission. DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio, mandated to confine felony offenders aged 10-21 committed by juvenile courts. Youth in DYS facilities engage in programming designed to address criminological and behavioral needs, reaching thousands of youth in facilities and on parole. The department operates under guiding principles that emphasize staff as a resource, respect, a trauma-responsive environment, support for youth and families, inclusion, collaboration, continuous improvement, and celebrating successes.

Requirements

  • Must meet eligibility requirements for Teacher/License appropriate for learning disabilities/behavioral disorders; or severe behavioral handicapped; or multi-handicapped; or develop-mentally handicapped; or current valid Ohio teaching license in mild/moderate, intervention specialist or moderate/intensive intervention specialist pursuant to OAC 3301.24.05 appropriate for those with learning disabilities & behavioral disorders & grade level to be assigned.
  • Teacher 3, 71213, must also have a master's degree but less than a Master's Degree & thirty (30) additional post-graduate quarter hours.
  • Non-degreed career-tech teachers shall be moved to the Master's Schedule after obtaining the requirement per OEA agreement.
  • Applicant must successfully obtain Teacher Certificate or License prior to employment.
  • Must be eligible for a background check.
  • Must be eligible for pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be eligible to attend 3 weeks of mandatory, paid training at the Correctional Training Academy in Orient, Ohio.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized instruction to students in special education in assigned subject areas, pre-career-tech subjects, self-help, leisure time alternatives, physical education, socialization skills, and environmental awareness.
  • Assess educational needs of youth and develop lesson plans to address these needs.
  • Provide instruction in academic or career-tech subjects, self-help skills, leisure time alternatives, physical education, socialization skills, environmental awareness, and individual assistance.
  • Administer, score, and interpret examinations and proficiency indicators.
  • Maintain discipline, security, and counsel students concerning performance, behavior, and personal problems.
  • Teach youth on patient living.
  • Track and record educational information for American Corrections Association (ACA) audits.
