About The Position

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is seeking a Teacher 1 (Literacy) to provide instruction in basic education needs such as reading, writing, and mathematics to inmates. This role involves assessing educational needs, developing lesson plans, providing individual assistance, administering and interpreting examinations, maintaining discipline and security, and counseling students. The position also requires preparing records and reports, managing supplies, and recommending new teaching materials. The department's mission is to reduce recidivism through rehabilitative treatment and programming in a safe, secure, and humane correctional environment.

Requirements

• Current Teacher Certificate appropriate for grade level & area of specialization to be assigned
• Baccalaureate degree or less (for Teacher 1, 71111)

Responsibilities

• Provides instruction in basic education needs (e.g., reading writing mathematics)
• Assesses educational needs of inmates
• Develops lesson plans to address those needs to include individual assignments and training
• Provides instruction and individual assistance
• Administers, scores and interprets examinations and proficiency indicators
• Maintains discipline and/or security
• Counsels students concerning their performance, behavior and/or personal problems.
• Attends meetings as required
• Prepares required records and reports (e.g., enrollment, grades, student progress)
• Inventories and orders supplies and materials needed
• Researches, selects, and recommends new teaching materials.
• Attends in-service training sessions and workshops for professional development
• Performs other duties as assigned
