About The Position

Windham Brannon is seeking a Tax Manager to join their growing Tax practice, focusing on non-profit clients. This role involves providing tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise to non-profit organizations. The position requires a significant portion of time dedicated to reviewing Form 990-EZ, 990, and 990-PF, with the remaining time spent on corporate, partnership, trust, and/or individual tax returns. The manager will be responsible for managing complex projects, conducting research on Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) issues, preparing Tax-Exempt Status Reinstatements, and collaborating with other client advisors. Additionally, the role involves mentoring junior staff, serving as a resource for non-profit financial best practices, training staff on non-profit tax laws, and developing new business relationships to expand the firm's clientele.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 8 years of progressive public accounting experience; including 3+ years serving in a Tax Manager or equivalent leadership role
  • Active CPA or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) license
  • 8+ years of experience preparing and reviewing private foundations, public charities, and other nonprofits
  • Demonstrated experience managing client relationships, multiple engagements, and engagement teams
  • Proven ability to mentor, develop, and review the work of tax professionals
  • A strong sense of ownership for delivering responsive client service
  • Excellent communication, project management, and organizational skills
  • Technology-forward mindset with an interest in process improvement, automation, and the use of AI tools to enhance nonprofit tax compliance, training, and knowledge sharing.

Responsibilities

  • Interact closely with clients to provide innovative tax planning, consulting, and compliance expertise.
  • Review form 990-EZ, 990, and 990-PF for private foundations, public charities, and other nonprofits approximately 50 percent of the time. As the practice grows this percentage will increase.
  • Review of corporate, partnership, trust and/or individual tax returns the remaining time. This work would decrease as the nonprofit work increases.
  • Manage and implement multiple and often complex projects simultaneously, which include client communication, review of detailed calculations, analysis, data gathering, and coordination of Windham Brannon and client resources.
  • Conduct research and analysis for tax implications of federal and state Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT) issues related to nonprofit specific activities.
  • Manage the preparation of Tax-Exempt Status Reinstatements including working with the client to gather or recreate the necessary information, and review of Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Collaborate with members of client’s other outside advisors in providing holistic and comprehensive planning services to the client.
  • Review and conduct research & analysis of a wide range of tax issues.
  • Motivate and mentor junior staff members by providing them with leadership, counseling, and professional guidance.
  • Be a resource for the firm regarding nonprofit financial best practices.
  • Helping to educate staff working on nonprofits of the tax laws and regulations including annual training of newly hired staff on nonprofit tax preparation.
  • Develop new business relationships with potential clients and outside advisors to grow Windham Brannon’s clientele base and work to foster on-going efforts to obtain additional opportunities for the Firm.
