About The Position

This application is for a Civil Service Examination for the opportunity to be placed on an Eligible List for a future opening. The Tax Auditor II is responsible for examining the most complex tax returns for mathematical accuracy of computations and the legal validity of methods used in arriving at the tax base and allowable deductions. This role requires oversight of duties and performance, assisting the public and businesses in preparing income tax returns, and leading clerical subordinates involved in adjusting tax returns. The position involves distributing work to other auditors and checking their completed work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Four years of full-time paid auditing experience in a government income tax office.
  • Must include/attach any required documents (i.e. Resume, Certifications, Driver’s License, etc…) to support you meet the Minimum Qualifications at the time of submitting your application.
  • Proof of active service or a DD Form 214, must be presented to the Commission at the time of filing application for the examination in which credit is sought in order to qualify for veterans' credit.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience may substitute for each year of college education lacking.
  • One year of paid income tax experience may substitute for each year of auditing experience in a government income tax office lacking.

Responsibilities

  • Examining the most complex tax returns for mathematical accuracy and legal validity.
  • Overseeing duties and performance.
  • Assisting the public and businesses in the preparation of income tax returns.
  • Leading clerical subordinates involved in adjusting tax returns.
  • Distributing work to other auditors and checking their completed work.
  • Auditing financial records of businesses and persons subject to City income tax.
  • Checking income tax returns for completeness and accuracy.
  • Distributing tax returns to other tax auditors for appropriate analysis and action.
  • Reviewing summaries of investigations prepared by auditors prior to commencing compliance action.
  • Making determinations with respect to completeness of legal preparations.
  • Supervising the auditing of financial records of business firms and individuals to determine compliance with the City income tax ordinance.
  • Monitoring the establishment and maintenance of income tax accounts.
  • Conferring with delinquent tax payers and setting up schedules for paying back taxes.
  • Conducting or administering investigations by searching directories, courthouse records, telephone company records, Chamber of Commerce files, and related offices to acquire information needed in locating delinquent tax payers and determining financial resources.
  • Performing related work as required.

Benefits

  • An additional five (5) points added to their raw score on the examination if the applicant has received an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions.
  • Ten (10) points are added to their raw score on the examination if applicant’s supporting documentation indicates more than fifteen percent (15%) service connected disability.
