About The Position

This is an application for a Civil Service Examination for the opportunity to be placed on an Eligible List for a future opening. The role involves examining, analyzing, and performing simple and complex tax investigations on various municipal income tax accounts and tax returns from individuals, businesses, and employers. The position requires conducting investigations to ensure compliance with the income tax ordinance, including field investigations of potential non-compliance and personal audits of difficult cases. The Supervising Tax Auditor will interpret ordinances, rules, and regulations, assist taxpayers in making returns, collaborate with divisional staff, and train or check the work of other staff members. Assistance to taxpayers and businesses will be provided in person, over the phone, via the internet, and through written correspondence. The role also includes performing other related duties within or outside the tax office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university required.
  • Two years of full-time paid experience in accounting or auditing required.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software packages.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, writing, and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Valid State of Ohio Driver's License is required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 30 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years full-time experience in preparation and auditing of income taxes is preferred.
  • Substitution: One year of any equivalent combination of education, training and experience may substitute for each year of college education lacking.

Responsibilities

  • Examines, analyzes, and performs simple and complex tax investigations on various municipal income tax accounts and tax returns from individuals, businesses and employers.
  • Conducts investigations necessary to secure compliance with the income tax ordinance.
  • Conducts field investigations of possible non-compliance.
  • Makes personal audits and investigations of doubtful or more difficult cases.
  • Interprets the ordinance, rules and regulations, and assists taxpayers in making returns.
  • Works with other divisional staff to complete tasks and to train and/or check the work of divisional staff if needed.
  • Assists taxpayers and businesses in person within and outside of the office, over the phone, internet, and thru written correspondence.
  • Performs other related duties within or outside the tax office.
