About The Position

The Department of Taxes Compliance Division is seeking a motivated professional who wants to make a meaningful impact by conducting audits that ensure the fair and accurate administration of Vermont's tax laws. In this role, you'll review taxpayer records, promote voluntary compliance, and help Vermonters understand their obligations. The Department of Taxes is looking for a curious, collaborative, digitally savvy, and self-driven individual who enjoys learning new tools and technologies used in tax administration. The ideal candidate communicates clearly and confidently, even when explaining complex or sensitive topics, and has a genuine desire to grow, develop, and contribute to a strong public mission. This position will primarily support the Department of Taxes. Candidates must agree to be fingerprinted and pass a background check to be eligible for this position, which will involve access to sensitive federal tax information. Background checks are required by the Internal Revenue Service and are authorized under Vermont law. 3 V.S.A. § 241. In accordance with VDT Standard Operating Procedure 2018-01, Background Investigations, Vermont and national criminal record checks will be conducted on all candidates. Requirements

  • Associates degree in, or enrollment towards a bachelors program for accounting, finance, public administration, mathematics, business management or a related field.
  • One (1) or more years of experience in tax examination/preparation, accounting, or financial operations.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience as a Tax Examiner II or Tax Analyst I or higher, with the State Of Vermont Department Of Taxes.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Education or training in taxation, accounting or auditing.
  • Experience in a government audit role.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing and analyzing taxpayer returns
  • Preparing assessments and adjustments to support accurate compliance
  • Communicating with taxpayers and their representatives
  • Participating in appeals and settlement discussions
  • Conducting on site audits when appropriate
