The Group Underwriter plays a key role within our growing Group Benefits team. The position is based in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, H9R 0A5, Canada, and reports to the Manager, Group Underwriting. This role is responsible for applying underwriting best practices to assess risk, establish rates, and negotiate terms for both new and existing group benefits clients. As a developing subject matter expert, the Group Underwriter will support underwriting decisions and work closely with the sales team to provide competitive and sustainable solutions. The role will also provide strategic support to sales partners while staying informed of market trends and legislative changes affecting the group benefits industry.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in Business Administration, Economics, Actuarial Science, or a related field.
  • 2-5 years of relevant underwriting experience in the insurance or group benefits industry is a strong asset.
  • Strong experience in data-driven decision-making, underwriting analysis, and portfolio management.
  • Experience with complex risk assessment and policy pricing is an asset.
  • Experience with underwriting-related regulatory compliance across multiple provinces or at the national level is an asset.
  • Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), Group Benefits Associate (GBA), Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI), or an equivalent designation is an asset.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills are required.
  • Fluency in French, both verbal and written, is an asset.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check, education verification, and employment reference checks is required before employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assess risks, establish rates, and recommend strategies for Dental, Vision, Prescription Drug, Extended Health Care, Life, Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), Critical Illness, Short-Term Disability, and Long-Term Disability insurance plans.
  • Perform underwriting activities related to technical rating and experience rating.
  • Analyze industry information, historical claims experience and trends, financial conditions, demographics, legislative changes, policy provisions, and other relevant criteria to calculate renewal rates.
  • Manage assigned workload effectively to meet productivity expectations and project timelines.
  • Understand regional sales strategies and market trends to support sales processes.
  • Assess risk levels in accordance with established underwriting guidelines and the organization’s risk tolerance.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to support negotiations related to plan design, exceptions, expenses, pricing, rate guarantees, and rate increase caps for new business and renewals.
  • Provide recommendations to reduce risk while meeting client needs.
  • Contribute to the identification and improvement of best practices, processes, and procedures.
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends, including mental health and wellness initiatives, economic changes, provincial drug plans, and legislative updates.
  • Support sales partners and the team with quotations, renewals, and related procedures.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial tracking.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
