About The Position

Join the Aircraft Systems Engineering team for a Summer 2027 internship! The System Engineering (SE) team has the big picture outlook of the aircraft and its systems, involved with the high-level thinking of how the systems will functionally integrate with the aircraft and understand the behavior well before there is hardware or software in the loop. If your preference is abstract thinking and foresight and not running analysis most of your work hours, then SE might be great experience to explore. Our team develops the processes to manage aircraft level requirements, maintains a close technical relationship and understanding of each of the critical systems on the aircraft (e.g., Avionics, Flight Controls, Engines, Electrical, etc.), and conducts audits with the regulators (e.g., FAA or EASA) to demonstrate compliance with SE principles (e.g., were the requirements validated in the design - methods not typically covered in undergraduate courses).

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at the time of application and actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (unrounded); must be listed on resume.
  • Minimum duration: 10–12 weeks (summer).
  • Must work onsite; this is not a remote position.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Nice To Haves

  • SE/MBSE interest or experience
  • Modeling and Simulation (MATLAB)
  • Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering major
  • Interest in AIAA Design/Build and Fly
  • Propulsion and Fluid Dynamics, Aerodynamics, Aircraft Flight Dynamics classes taken/planned

Responsibilities

  • Learn how Systems Engineering principles of Requirements Management, Validation, Verification, Change Management, Process Assurance and Functional Integration are used in the design and development of aircraft and its systems.
  • Learn how Model Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) methods apply to Requirements Development.
  • Support current SE processes and assist in driving their use for future projects and programs.
  • Support coordination meetings with the aircraft system owners, to ensure the processes are understood and adhered to in accordance with the program objectives.
  • Learn about Requirements Management databases and tools (e.g., IBM DOORS, Siemens Teamcenter, MATLAB (System Composer), etc.).
  • Become familiar with MATLAB and how to create models in the application.
