Systems Engineer, MK1 Vehicle Definition and Test

BLUE ORIGIN•West Melbourne, FL
•$121,023 - $169,432

About The Position

Blue Origin’s Lunar Permanence business unit develops Blue Moon lunar landers and related products, supporting sustainable transportation of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface. The Systems Engineer will be part of a diverse engineering team working on the MK1 lunar lander system. The role owns vehicle design products and defines avionics-focused integrated vehicle functional test scope. It includes maintaining functional test matrices that connect avionics requirements to verification tests, defining test objectives and traceability, and owning vehicle requirements, design parameters, and design products within assigned scope. The engineer will also develop automation—including AI-assisted tooling—to turn test and analysis results into defensible verification evidence. This work contributes to spacecraft verification, certification, and mission success.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in aerospace, electrical, systems, or computer engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of systems or test engineering experience spanning requirements definition, traceability, interface definition, integration, test, verification, and validation.
  • Hands-on experience planning and executing functional tests on avionics-rich systems, such as spacecraft, aircraft, launch vehicles, or comparable complex electromechanical systems.
  • Working knowledge of spacecraft avionics architectures, including power distribution, C&DH, data buses, and sensor interfaces.
  • Demonstrated scripting or software ability, such as Python, applied to test data, test automation, or engineering data management.
  • Experience owning a verification or test artifact end to end, such as a matrix, plan, procedure, or closure package.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information effectively.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building automation or AI/LLM-based tooling using engineering data, such as requirements databases, test results, or document generation.
  • Experience with requirements management and verification database tools, including their APIs.
  • Experience with hardware-in-the-loop or spacecraft avionics integration laboratory testing.
  • Experience with thermal vacuum, vibration, acoustic, or EMI/EMC campaigns on flight hardware.
  • Experience with integrated hazard analysis and control verification for spacecraft.
  • Experience with lunar, deep space, or planetary missions.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain vehicle functional test matrices that map avionics and software-interfacing requirements to test cases, configurations, and verification closure paths.
  • Define test scope, objectives, success criteria, and pass/fail limits for avionics functional vehicle testing, including power-up and power distribution, command and data handling, bus and network integrity, sensor end-to-end checks, GN&C phasing and polarity, harness and continuity verification, and EMI/EMC.
  • Review data, generate test reports, and close out requirement verification.
  • Own avionics- and software-related vehicle requirements, design parameters, design products, ICDs, and budgets.
  • Build scripts, data pipelines, and AI/LLM-assisted tooling to automate verification evidence capture, formatting, traceability, test-matrix maintenance, and verification status reporting.
  • Identify and resolve gaps or inconsistencies between requirements, test coverage, and captured evidence; drive closure with requirements owners and IPTs.
  • Lead test anomaly response, troubleshooting, tracking, and reporting for assigned test scope.
  • Support Test Readiness Reviews, test execution, and verification audits.
  • Contribute to hazard analysis and control verification related to integrated vehicle test activities.
  • Coordinate with Avionics, Software, GN&C, Comms, and EPS IPTs and the test team to sequence test scope with build and integration flow.
