Systems Engineer - Mechatronics, Electrical

Sigma Design•Redmond, WA
•$95,000 - $137,000•Onsite

About The Position

The Systems Engineer – Mechatronics / Electrical is responsible for troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and sustaining support of mechatronic and electrical systems within advanced robotic platforms. The role investigates hardware failures, drives corrective actions, and supports system integration and reliability improvements from prototype development through production. This is an in-office position in a standard lab/production environment. Appropriate safety garments (PPE) must be worn. The role may occasionally involve working in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments for design testing and validation, and traveling to other facilities, clients, or suppliers as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related field, or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in hardware troubleshooting, mechatronics, electrical systems, or sustaining engineering; alternatively, a master's degree with 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with root cause analysis, failure investigations, and corrective action processes.
  • Strong understanding of electromechanical systems, including actuators, motors, transmissions, power electronics, batteries, and sensors.
  • Proficiency reading electrical schematics and mechanical drawings and using diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and logic analyzers.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, EtherCAT, and Ethernet.
  • Strong written and verbal English-language communication skills.
  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and outside one's work group.
  • Commitment to and adherence to Sigma Design Core Values.
  • Pass a post-offer background verification.
  • Ability to stand and work for up to 12 hours in different positions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.

Nice To Haves

  • Scripting experience, preferably Python, for test automation and data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Lead root cause analysis and failure investigations for mechatronic and electrical systems, driving corrective and preventive actions through resolution.
  • Troubleshoot and provide sustaining support for electromechanical components, including actuators, motors, gearboxes, bearings, power systems, batteries, sensors, circuit boards, and wiring harnesses.
  • Investigate system-level failures through hardware testing, inspections, teardowns, measurements, and performance analysis.
  • Review electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and engineering changes to identify system risks and opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop and maintain diagnostic procedures, test fixtures, acceptance criteria, and regression tests to improve failure detection and system reliability.
  • Support system integration, release readiness, and failure review processes, including issue tracking, containment, and rework plans.
  • Analyze hardware performance and failure trends to identify opportunities for reliability and design improvements.
  • Document investigation findings, test procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines; provide technical guidance to technicians and junior engineers.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, controls, manufacturing, and safety teams to support prototype development and system integration.
  • Follow Business Technology policies to protect sensitive data and reduce information security occurrences.
