About The Position

The Mechatronics Engineer is a professional engineering position responsible for researching, designing, developing, testing, and commissioning automation, intelligent systems, and industrial control systems used in food manufacturing. The role designs and implements automated solutions and electromechanical and control-system improvements to increase production and facility-system reliability, safety, quality, and throughput. It also leads engineering analysis of equipment performance and failures and provides technical direction to maintenance technicians and contractors implementing engineered solutions. The position works across automation design, controls engineering, equipment upgrades, reliability engineering, troubleshooting, project analysis, calibration, and process improvement. It collaborates with Operations, Quality, Safety, vendors, contractors, integrators, and maintenance personnel, while maintaining technical documentation and ensuring work meets applicable codes, safety requirements, food-safety practices, and regulatory requirements. This is an on-site role in an active manufacturing facility in College Park, Georgia. Work may involve extended periods in refrigerated areas below 40°F and requires moving throughout the facility, standing or walking for extended periods, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, reaching, and safely lifting items consistent with maintenance work. Schedule flexibility, including occasional nights, weekends, shutdowns, emergency support, and participation in an on-call rotation, is required based on operational needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation or Controls Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • At least 3 years of professional engineering experience designing, programming, testing, or improving automated manufacturing equipment, including PLC-controlled electromechanical systems.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading technical project teams, contractors, or technical personnel in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, variable-frequency drives, sensors, motors, servo systems, industrial networks, robotics, electrical controls, pneumatics, hydraulics, and mechanical power transmission.
  • Experience programming and modifying PLC and HMI platforms and troubleshooting industrial networks.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks, PLC programming software, Microsoft Office, and a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ability to apply engineering principles, mathematics, and scientific methods to root-cause analysis, reliability improvement, and development of preventive and predictive maintenance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of workplace safety practices, including lockout/tagout and safe electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, technical-writing, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage competing priorities, and respond to urgent equipment issues.
  • Ability to meet the physical and schedule demands described for work in the manufacturing facility.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in food, beverage, protein, consumer packaged goods, or another highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with embedded or industrial software development, such as C, C++, Python, or LabVIEW; HMI/SCADA platforms such as AVEVA InTouch; or simulation software.
  • Experience with reliability-centered maintenance, predictive maintenance technologies, OEE improvement, and capital equipment design and installation.
  • Familiarity with USDA, SQF, HACCP, GMP, and sanitary-design requirements.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, Engineer in Training (EIT) designation, or equivalent professional engineering credential.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement automated systems and control solutions for industrial tasks, including transferring, handling, processing, and packaging materials and goods.
  • Design, develop, program, and implement control circuits, algorithms, and PLC, HMI, servo, and motion-control programs for electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
  • Research and select sensors, communication technologies, industrial networks, control devices, and suitable materials, including materials meeting sanitary-design requirements.
  • Upgrade existing production equipment with mechatronic elements and prepare mechanical design documents, electrical drawings, and specifications using CAD software.
  • Model or simulate design concepts, implement and test solutions, commission systems, and document qualification test results before production release.
  • Assess feasibility, costs, and performance benefits of equipment and capital or continuous-improvement projects; prepare estimates and justifications and monitor costs against budget.
  • Analyze manufacturing procedures, equipment performance, downtime, and failure data; lead root-cause analysis and implement improvements to reliability, safety, quality, throughput, and maintainability.
  • Monitor and calibrate automated and industrial control systems and components to maximize production efficiency.
  • Define engineering requirements for preventive and predictive maintenance programs; evaluate equipment condition and lifecycle and recommend repairs, replacements, upgrades, and lifecycle plans.
  • Provide engineering support diagnosing mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, instrumentation, robotics, PLC, HMI, servo, sensor, and controls failures, and direct safe restoration of operations.
  • Provide technical guidance, consultation, and training to maintenance technicians, operations personnel, and management; assign, schedule, and review technicians’ technical work in accordance with company policies.
  • Oversee contractors, integrators, and vendors to ensure compliance with project scope, specifications, schedule, safe work practices, quality, and acceptance testing.
  • Maintain project files and engineering reports, electrical drawings, control-program backups, technical documentation, spare-parts specifications, and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure designs and work comply with applicable electrical and mechanical codes and standards, workplace safety requirements including lockout/tagout, food-safety and sanitary-design practices, company procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Quality, Safety, and vendors to define equipment requirements, prioritize engineering work, and plan shutdowns and project execution.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and provide after-hours engineering support when operational needs require it.
  • Complete additional responsibilities assigned that are consistent with the professional engineering nature of the position.
