Mechatronics Engineer

CircuitHub•South Deerfield, MA

About The Position

CircuitHub is hiring a Mechatronics Engineer to develop and scale The Grid, its factory-scale robotics platform for small-batch, high-mix electronics assembly. Engineers own projects end to end, from identifying a problem—often on the factory floor—and defining its specification, through mechanism selection, CAD design, engineering calculations, prototyping, machining, software development, and deployment in production. The role combines mechanical design and hands-on prototyping with machine software developed on CircuitHub’s in-house robotics operating system. AI tools and agents are used throughout the engineering workflow, with support from a dedicated software engineering team that builds the operating system. This is a design role with practical prototyping and responsibility for how machines perform in live production. The position is full-time and on-site at CircuitHub’s factory in South Deerfield, Western Massachusetts.

Requirements

  • Must have built things before; robotics experience is ideal and may come from a hobby, student, employee, or founder context.
  • Able to diagnose system-wide failures from first principles.
  • Able to prototype mechanical and software fixes.
  • Able to work autonomously and communicate clearly with a distributed team.
  • Willing to take responsibility for machine performance in live production.
  • Basic software engineering skills are needed for developing machine software; a software-specific background is not required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience programming machines, including PLCs, robot controllers, embedded systems, or Python.
  • Experience programming and operating CNC machinery.
  • Experience designing chemical-handling machinery.
  • Experience with optics.
  • Experience leading the build and deployment of large-scale automated systems.
  • Experience writing software to control machines.
  • Experience designing for a range of manufacturing methods, including machining, sheet metal, and injection moulding.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.
  • Experience taking parts and subsystems through to manufacture as part of a design team.
  • Knowledge of design for machining.
  • Interest in moving a career toward practical robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Understand problems, often on the factory floor, and translate them into clear specifications.
  • Generate and evaluate ideas, selecting appropriate mechanisms for the task.
  • Design mechanisms, gantries, and end effectors in Fusion 360 and validate designs with engineering calculations.
  • Prototype and build machines, including machining prototype parts in the in-house CNC shop.
  • Develop machine behavior on the in-house robotics operating system, using AI agents as part of the software workflow.
  • Analyze end-effector behavior from video and revise geometry and control approaches to improve throughput and reliability.
  • Specify sensors to detect operating errors or monitor chemical processes.
  • Prototype and deploy robots, including test robots for in-line PCB validation.
  • Commission machines and hand them over to the build team for scaling.
  • Diagnose system-wide failures from first principles and develop mechanical or software fixes.
  • Take responsibility for machine performance in live production.
  • Work across US and UK sites to share learnings and help shape the roadmap.
  • Work autonomously and communicate clearly with a team spread across sites.
