Electrical Systems Engineer

ChromoLogic•Monrovia, CA
•$70,000 - $110,000

About The Position

ChromoLogic LLC is seeking an Electrical Systems Engineer to develop embedded products from initial concept through working prototypes and production readiness. The role spans system architecture, custom electronics, firmware development, hands-on prototyping, testing, and manufacturing support. The engineer will own meaningful parts of the systems they develop and contribute to technical decisions while collaborating with software, mechanical, optical, manufacturing, and product teams. The position involves designing production-ready electronics and multilayer PCBs, developing embedded firmware in C/C++, integrating microcontrollers and communications interfaces, and assembling and troubleshooting prototypes at the bench. The engineer will also document designs and tests, support verification and production ramp, coordinate with suppliers, and investigate field issues. ChromoLogic works on technologies for medical, aerospace, and security applications, combining electronics, embedded software, optics, sensors, communications, and mechanical systems.

Requirements

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Typically 5+ years of relevant experience spanning embedded hardware, firmware, PCB design, and prototype development.
  • Experience designing microcontroller-based electronics and writing C/C++ for resource-constrained systems.
  • Practical PCB design skills, including stack-up planning, grounding, mixed-signal or high-speed layout, power integrity, EMC considerations, and design for manufacturing.
  • Confidence assembling and modifying prototypes, probing signals, and methodically isolating problems.
  • Ability to explain technical decisions clearly and collaborate across engineering disciplines.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals, demonstrated project ownership, and ability to learn unfamiliar technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Translate product requirements into practical system architectures and production-ready electronic designs.
  • Create schematics and multilayer PCB layouts using Altium, KiCad, Eagle, or comparable EDA tools.
  • Select components considering performance, availability, reliability, manufacturability, board space, and cost.
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, optical, manufacturing, and product teams on system-level tradeoffs.
  • Develop, debug, and maintain embedded firmware in C/C++.
  • Implement bare-metal or RTOS-based architectures suited to product timing, reliability, and resource requirements.
  • Work with microcontroller platforms such as ARM Cortex/STM32, AVR, PIC, or similar devices.
  • Integrate and validate interfaces such as BLE, CAN, SPI, I²C, UART, and USB.
  • Assemble and modify prototypes through SMD soldering, fine-pitch rework, wiring, cable crimping, and enclosure integration.
  • Lead board bring-up and troubleshoot interactions among hardware, firmware, sensors, power, and communications.
  • Use lab equipment to investigate failures and verify performance.
  • Develop test procedures and validate designs under real operating conditions.
  • Create design and firmware documentation, test procedures, and manufacturing packages.
  • Support prototype builds, design verification, supplier coordination, and production ramp.
  • Investigate field issues and apply findings to improve designs.
