Systems Engineer, Infrastructure

Veilant•Tysons, VA

About The Position

Veilant is seeking a Systems Engineer to build, deploy, secure, and maintain mission-focused infrastructure. The role centers on Linux administration and common network troubleshooting, with support for physical, virtualized, and cloud environments in collaboration with experienced engineers across Linux, networking, virtualization, cloud, security, and automation. The successful candidate will be comfortable at the Linux command line, able to investigate common issues, and know when to seek assistance from other engineers. The role includes deploying and administering primarily Debian and Ubuntu Linux systems using established standards and peer review for production deployments, supporting a smaller Windows footprint, and assisting with VMware and cloud infrastructure. The engineer will investigate connectivity issues, assist with network and security-related changes and investigations, help harden systems and automate repetitive work, improve monitoring, and create useful technical documentation. During the first six months, the engineer is expected to learn the environment, own routine work on assigned systems, and contribute to complex changes with support. Success includes deploying hardened Linux systems to production, understanding system dependencies and operational risks, contributing to cross-functional investigations, identifying improvements to reliability and security, supporting automation and monitoring improvements, and producing documentation that other engineers can use. The position offers flexible remote work options and a stated annual salary range of $135,000–$185,000 for full-time status. Compensation depends on factors including qualifications, experience, education, certifications, technical skills, role scope, market considerations, and location.
