Systems Engineer, Motion Controls Safety

Zoox•Foster City, CA
•$194,000 - $244,000

About The Position

Zoox is developing a full-stack autonomous mobility solution for cities and a robotaxi service. The System Design and Mission Assurance (SDMA) team constructs the safety case and fail-operational design for autonomous driving robots ahead of public-road deployment. In this role, you will perform safety analysis and define performance requirements for motion planning and control systems as the Operational Design Domain (ODD) expands. You will build and extend fault-injection simulations, support simulations used to verify AI driving safety, and work with software, hardware, and verification and validation teams to ensure requirements are met through testing. You will also use AI and large language model tools to accelerate analysis and automate repetitive work.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Robotics, Automotive, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience developing vehicle motion control systems.
  • Experience building or using simulations to analyze vehicle dynamic behavior and inform motion control requirements.
  • Strong analytical skills in quantitative analysis and modeling, performance metrics definition, and system-level trade-off analysis.
  • Excellent technical communication and documentation abilities.
  • Demonstrated success working with cross-functional teams in complex technical environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with autonomous vehicle development or similar complex robotics systems.
  • Familiarity with requirements management tools such as Polarion or DOORS.
  • Experience with vehicle dynamics modeling and simulation-based safety verification.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and other industry safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Perform safety analysis and define performance requirements for motion planning and control systems across expanding ODD conditions, including degraded driving modes.
  • Build and extend fault-injection simulations to determine how quickly vehicles must detect and respond to faults in new ODDs and next-generation platforms.
  • Support simulation pipelines for verifying AI driving safety, including defining requirements for vehicle dynamics models.
  • Partner with software, hardware, and verification and validation teams to ensure requirements are met through SIL, HIL, and on-vehicle testing.
  • Use AI and LLM tools to accelerate analysis and automate repetitive manual work.

Benefits

  • Paid time off, including sick leave, vacation, and bereavement leave.
  • Unpaid time off.
  • Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights.
  • Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
  • Health insurance.
  • Long-term care insurance.
  • Long-term and short-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package.
