About The Position

Aeva is seeking a Systems Engineer, LiDAR Characterization, to work hands-on with next-generation 4D LiDAR sensors. The role focuses on running sensors in laboratory and field settings, measuring performance across a range of scenarios, investigating system behavior, debugging system-level issues, and supporting sensor calibration. The engineer will work closely with senior systems engineers and cross-functional algorithms, firmware, hardware, and optics teams, developing an understanding of the sensor from photonics and electronics through signal processing and point-cloud output. The position includes setting up and running tests on LiDAR sensors in the lab and on vehicles, developing automation software for lab testing and data collection, supporting field data collection, investigating and diagnosing problems, helping develop and verify calibration procedures, and analyzing and communicating results. The stated salary range is $110,000–$149,153 per year. Depending on the position offered, compensation may also include equity, bonus, and other forms of compensation, along with the listed benefits.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics/Photonics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 0–2 years of industry experience.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with sensors, optical systems, or electronic test equipment, gained through research, internships, or industry.
  • Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for data analysis.
  • Foundation in signal processing, optics, or measurement statistics.
  • Methodical approach to debugging problems spanning hardware, firmware, and software.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with LiDAR, radar, or other perception sensors.
  • Experience with FMCW or coherent detection.
  • Experience with sensor calibration.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and run tests on LiDAR sensors in laboratory and vehicle settings for comprehensive characterization.
  • Develop automation software to accelerate laboratory testing and data collection.
  • Support field data collection across real-world scenarios, including preparing sensors and test setups and logging test conditions.
  • Investigate system-level issues by reproducing problems, collecting diagnostic data, and working with relevant engineering teams to identify root causes.
  • Help develop, run, and verify sensor calibration procedures.
  • Analyze sensor data using Python or MATLAB, and document and present results to the Systems team and cross-functional partners.
