Lidar Analyst - Land

Fugro•Lafayette, LA

About The Position

Fugro’s aerial mapping services transform LiDAR, imagery, and geospatial data into accurate mapping products and actionable insights. The Lidar Analyst supports LiDAR data processing and vector data editing to help ensure high-quality mapping deliverables. The role focuses on reviewing and refining LiDAR point classifications and editing vector GIS data, especially hydrographic features such as rivers, lakes, and watershed boundaries, in accordance with project specifications. Working under the guidance of senior analysts, the technician uses geospatial software such as TerraSolid, LP360, ArcGIS Pro, and Global Mapper to correct automated classification errors and create or edit vector datasets. A foundational understanding of LiDAR data, classification techniques, and GIS workflows, along with careful attention to detail, is needed to perform quality control and contribute to accurate, reliable geospatial products.

Requirements

  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Foundational understanding of LiDAR technology and point-cloud data structure, such as LAS format and elevation models, and basic familiarity with industry classification standards such as ASPRS classes.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience with LiDAR processing software such as TerraSolid (TerraScan/TerraModeler on MicroStation), LP360, or Global Mapper.
  • Ability to use Esri ArcGIS Pro for vector editing and analysis, including creating and editing features, applying topology rules, and performing spatial quality control.
  • Excellent observational skills and ability to carefully review large geospatial datasets to identify misclassifications, missing features, and inconsistencies.
  • Quality-oriented approach and commitment to meeting established accuracy standards and project requirements.
  • Basic analytical and problem-solving ability to investigate data issues and apply appropriate fixes.
  • Comfort learning and adopting new tools or techniques, including adjusting classification parameters or using ArcGIS extensions.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geography, Remote Sensing, or a related field.
  • Relevant coursework or project experience in LiDAR data processing or GIS data editing.

Responsibilities

  • Place Quality, Health & Safety, Security, and environmental protection at the center of work, and avoid intentionally placing employees, processes, customers, or communities at risk.
  • Review automatically classified LiDAR point-cloud data and manually reclassify points when needed, correcting misclassified and unremoved noise points with LiDAR processing software.
  • Ensure point clouds meet project specifications, with ground, vegetation, building, and other classes properly distinguished to support accurate terrain models and analyses.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining vector GIS layers derived from LiDAR and imagery, particularly hydrographic features; use ArcGIS Pro to digitize, edit, and quality-check rivers, streams, lakes, and watershed boundaries.
  • Ensure hydrographic breaklines and watershed polygons are accurately drawn and integrated with elevation data; perform topology checks and attribute updates to maintain data integrity and consistency.
  • Perform routine quality assurance and quality control on LiDAR and vector data, validate classifications and required vector features, and flag anomalies such as classification errors or misalignments.
  • Work with senior team members to resolve data-quality issues through additional automated classification routines or manual corrections, and verify that updates improve quality.
  • Follow established processing workflows and project guidelines, and maintain organized records of dataset changes, including classification adjustments and vector edits.
  • Communicate progress and issues to the project lead or supervisor promptly, seek guidance on complex problems, and contribute QA findings and process-improvement insights in team meetings or debriefs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Benefits

  • On-the-job learning experiences and career growth opportunities.
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning.
  • Business and technical training.
  • Leadership development programs.
  • Flexible work models.
