Validation engineers identify use cases in which a device may stop working as intended, then assess the impact and causes of failures. They determine which failures are acceptable and which may need mitigation for quality, safety, or other reasons. They also verify that parts consistently perform to datasheet specifications, conservative limits, or requirements defined in the validation/verification compliance matrix (VVCM). The role involves designing PCB boards and developing automation software to increase test coverage and reduce data collection time. Validation engineers design, develop, and implement methods for measuring device performance and troubleshoot issues involving related systems, equipment, or devices. The work is often performed in a post-silicon lab or on software programs used to run measurements.
