Systems Engineer III - Federal

Unlimited Technology•Herndon, VA

About The Position

Unlimited Technology is hiring a senior technical resource to design, configure, program, integrate, test, and commission security technology systems for its Government/Federal business. The role supports enterprise, multi-site, and mission-critical environments and serves as an architect, technical lead, and escalation point. It releases Bills of Materials for complex projects, resolves disputed scope, leads complex integrations and system architecture, reviews other engineers’ deliverables, and develops and recommends engineering standards and best practices. The position reports to the Systems Engineering Manager and has no direct reports. Work is assigned through the Systems Engineering Ticket Request Queue. The engineer works closely with Project Management, Installation, Service, CAD and Design, and Solution Engineering, and may need clearance eligibility, badging, and government site access. This senior individual-contributor role independently owns complex work, provides technical leadership and mentoring, and supports the full scope of Systems Engineer work across project complexity levels. The work includes technical review and release of project Bills of Materials; validation of federal product requirements; architecture, programming, integration, commissioning, and cybersecurity work; customer training and handover; peer review and technical coaching; and coordination with project teams and government stakeholders. The role also participates in on-call and extended-hours coverage, may travel up to 20%, and involves work at customer facilities, construction sites, data centers, and equipment rooms. Physical demands include occasional lifting and carrying up to 45 pounds and working in elevated, confined, outdoor, or uneven environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience in electronic security, systems integration, or technical project delivery, including enterprise, multi-site, or mission-critical environments.
  • Advanced experience programming, integrating, testing, and commissioning integrated security systems, including access control, video management, intrusion detection, intercom, command and control/PSIM, structured cabling, and supporting network and server infrastructure.
  • Advanced knowledge of networking, servers, databases, and virtualization, including TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, Windows Server, firewall concepts, and security-system network requirements; ability to coordinate complex network configurations with customer IT resources.
  • Strong knowledge of system architecture, high availability, redundancy, disaster recovery, and technology lifecycle management.
  • Working knowledge of cybersecurity, system hardening, and secure configuration practices for integrated systems.
  • Advanced manufacturer certification on primary supported platforms, maintained throughout employment, and demonstrated advanced proficiency across multiple supported technologies.
  • Ability to mentor engineers, review technical deliverables, and serve as a technical escalation point.
  • Proficiency with engineering design, documentation, and spreadsheet tools, including Bluebeam and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% and meet applicable customer, site-access, badging, and background-investigation requirements.
  • CSEIP (Certified System Engineer ICAM PACS) certification.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain Public Trust or government clearance as required by contract.
  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods and work at a computer; communicate effectively in person, by phone, and through virtual platforms.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb ladders, work in elevated or confined spaces, wear required PPE, and navigate uneven terrain and outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 45 pounds occasionally; heavier items require assistance or mechanical aid.

Responsibilities

  • Review and release as-sold Bills of Materials to Project Management, including for complex, enterprise, and multi-site projects, and resolve disputed or ambiguous scope before ordering.
  • Verify Bills of Materials for compliance with Section 889 restricted-manufacturer rules and GSA Approved Products List requirements on federal and government projects.
  • Validate sold designs against field conditions and contractual scope, and lead resolution of post-award variances.
  • Create port charts and system architecture documentation, including for complex and multi-site environments; validate enterprise and multi-site storage sizing and retention calculations.
  • Review other engineers’ deliverables for accuracy, completeness, and constructability.
  • Program and integrate complex, enterprise, and mission-critical systems, including multi-platform and third-party integrations.
  • Design and configure system architecture with high availability, redundancy, failover, and disaster recovery considerations; lead backup and recovery configuration at commissioning.
  • Design and manage Active Directory and LDAP integration and certificate management, including federated, multi-site, and mobile credential deployments.
  • Own PKI integration design for PIV/CAC-enabled PACS deployments, including certificate-chain validation, CRL and OCSP revocation checking, and OSDP Secure Channel key-management architecture that accounts for legacy hardware limitations.
  • Lead technical remediation of complex or systemic ATO and vulnerability-assessment findings, sequencing fixes to avoid downtime and validating resolution under retest.
  • Work with ISSO, ISSM, and Authorizing Official stakeholders on NIST 800-53 control implementation, continuous-monitoring evidence, and risk-acceptance or compensating-control decisions.
  • Lead testing, commissioning, customer acceptance, and project closeout, including for complex and enterprise projects.
  • Deliver handover training to enterprise and multi-site customers.
  • Lead cybersecurity, system-hardening, and secure-configuration requirements, including DISA STIG controls on government projects.
  • Communicate design intent, configuration decisions, technical requirements, status, dependencies, blockers, and field impacts to relevant internal teams, subcontractors, and customer stakeholders.
  • Request and follow up on information needed to complete assigned work; escalate capacity, authority, or technical-scope concerns with documented findings.
  • Share redline, commissioning, and pre-order review findings with Solutions Engineering to improve future designs.
  • Serve as technical escalation point for Systems Engineer I and II personnel and coach the team.
  • Develop and recommend engineering standards, design methodologies, documentation practices, templates, and technical procedures.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend improvements to design, equipment selection, and engineering workflows.
  • Maintain advanced manufacturer certifications across supported platforms, including recertification as platforms release new versions.
  • Assume work from other engineers during absences, deadline pressure, or capacity constraints as assigned.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and extended-hours coverage.
  • Lead redlining of drawings for complex systems so as-built production reflects installed and commissioned conditions.
  • Ensure configurations, credentials, remote access, and system documentation are complete and accurate for turnover.
  • Follow site-specific safety programs, participate in job hazard analyses, and stop work and escalate unsafe conditions.
  • Maintain professional conduct in occupied, escorted, and secure customer environments and protect confidential customer security information, credentials, and system documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
