About The Position

This position provides systems engineering and system-level integration support to the MSFC Systems Requirements & Verification Branch (EV72) for the Space Launch System (SLS), and to the MSFC Systems Engineering and Integration Division (EV70). The successful candidate coordinates and interfaces with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and the Lead Systems Engineer, and participates in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The role supports the development and assessment of systems engineering products for SLS Developmental Flight Instrumentation (DFI), as well as program and project milestones and the activities in which these products are assessed and matured. The candidate may use IBM DOORS Next Generation, Cameo System Modeler, or database development and analysis tools. The position requires working independently with minimal supervision, contributing as an effective team member, and assuming lead roles in SLS requirements management, verification, and validation planning. The work environment is primarily a general office setting (90%) with some lab work (10%), and includes domestic travel of less than 5%. The normal workday is 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; minimal overtime may be required to meet milestones and technical demands. Proof of U.S. citizenship and a STAR ID are required.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least eight years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration, requirements management, system architecture definition, functional design, and design integration.
  • Demonstrated experience working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to identify requirements and resolve vehicle/propulsion systems integration issues.
  • Excellent oral, written, and customer-relations skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work independently, contribute effectively as a team player in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and assume lead roles in SLS requirements management, verification, and validation planning.
  • U.S. citizenship and a STAR ID.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Experience developing and maintaining requirements using IBM Engineering DOORS Next (DNG) or Cameo Systems Modeler.
  • Current knowledge of the SLS Program, including a working understanding of SLS elements, engineering disciplines, and organizational interfaces.
  • Experience developing Python scripts to extract, transform, and analyze data.
  • Demonstrated experience in instrumentation design and integration and/or bandwidth and sensor allocation assessment and analysis.
  • Familiarity with NASA systems engineering policies and procedures governing verification, and experience using tools and systems to manage verification compliance data.
  • Working knowledge of stress analysis.
  • Experience developing verification strategies and plans and facilitating successful completion of verification compliance activities.
  • Knowledge of launch vehicle programmatic planning processes and experience overseeing prime-contractor hardware production, test, and certification activities.

Responsibilities

  • Own and maintain systems engineering products associated with Developmental Flight Instrumentation (DFI) requirements and SLS OFI, EFI, and DFI telemetry bandwidth allocations.
  • Own and maintain systems engineering products supporting criticality assessments of measurement sets mapped to Flight Data Analysis (FDA) tasks and Flight Test Objectives.
  • Lead multi-element, multidisciplinary task teams evaluating and dispositioning variances and authoring variance memo notifications for SLS Engineering Flight Instrumentation (EFI) and Developmental Flight Instrumentation (DFI).
  • Provide technical integration across engineering disciplines, SLS elements, and cross-program organizations, including risk-informed insight and oversight through requirements traceability, technical assessments, and post-flight evaluation activities.
  • Identify, assess, document, and communicate risks associated with systems engineering products, processes, and interfaces, and maintain applicable risk records in the NASA Risk Management System.
  • Support system-level vehicle design trades and analysis needed to validate requirements and maintain control of the design baseline.
  • Coordinate and interface with engineering disciplines, system elements, and the Lead Systems Engineer; participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies.
