Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer

Joby Aviation•Marina, CA

About The Position

Joby is seeking an instrumentation engineer to develop, improve, and maintain data acquisition hardware, real-time visualization software, and processes for installing and maintaining flight test instrumentation on its VTOL electric aircraft. The role works with a small team to support the deployment and configuration of supplementary instrumentation systems across test aircraft, including developing processes that preserve configuration control throughout the aircraft’s flight-test life. The engineer will support design and manufacturing with detailed CAD models and drawings, develop LabVIEW tools for real-time and post-flight visualization and automated data pipelines, integrate new data acquisition instruments, analyze flight data, and help guide the transition from R&D testing to certification flight testing.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Engineering or a relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience and training.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Mechanical design and manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and sensors such as foil strain gauges, accelerometers, load cells, thermocouples, and encoders, including sensor installation.
  • Fluency using LabVIEW for data collection, real-time data analytics, and GUI development.
  • Experience using Diadem, MATLAB, Python, or another scripting language for data post-processing.
  • Experience with digital signal processing and wireless data transmission.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Hands-on attitude and strong analytical background.

Nice To Haves

  • MS/PhD or 5+ years of experience.
  • Experience with the CATIA tool.
  • Experience working with flight test organizations and aircraft certification.
  • Experience with sensor installations and cable management.
  • Experience with NI hardware, specifically cDAQ and C Series modules.
  • Experience with software development using Python or another scripting language.
  • Hands-on machine shop skills using a lathe, mill, welder, and other machine shop equipment.
  • Experience with high-voltage electronics.
  • Experience testing aircraft composite structures.
  • Experience testing aircraft mechanical systems.
  • Aerospace and rapid prototyping experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and configure hardware and software for efficient deployment of supplementary flight test instrumentation systems on Joby test aircraft.
  • Develop processes for installing instrumentation hardware across multiple aircraft and maintaining configuration control throughout the flight-test life of each aircraft.
  • Develop and maintain detailed CAD models and engineering drawings to support design and manufacturing activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Use National Instruments LabVIEW and related tools to develop GUIs, LabVIEW VIs, and other tools for real-time and post-flight data visualization, automated data pipelines, and calibration-information traceability.
  • Incorporate new types of data acquisition instruments into the flight test instrumentation system and data pipelines.
  • Analyze flight data to improve and maintain instrumentation systems and provide engineering teams with quantifiable feedback to understand and optimize designs.
  • Help guide the architecture of processes and software tools that support the transition from R&D testing to certification flight testing.

Benefits

  • Paid time off.
  • Healthcare benefits.
  • 401(k) plan with a company match.
