About The Position

The Senior System Security Engineer supports the DoD Anti-Tamper Executive Agent Field Program Office (ATEA FPO) and customers working in Special Access Programs (SAP) and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) facilities. The role involves collaborating with program managers, engineers, financial managers, and industry subject matter experts across DoD Services and Agencies and Intelligence Community customers. The position is located at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and performs highly technical work in a classified environment. The engineer supports requirements development, evaluation, testing, and integration; Program Protection planning and anti-tamper methodologies; technology and product acquisition; and assessment of capabilities against system requirements. The role also evaluates technologies and system designs to protect Critical Program Information (CPI), develops approaches for assessing GOTS and COTS components for vulnerabilities, and works with DoD Anti-Tamper Evaluation Teams to identify risks from foreign and adversary exploitation. Additional work includes improving anti-tamper and anti-exploitation practices across weapons-system development and sustainment, and teaching Anti-Tamper course modules while assisting with curriculum development. The position requires knowledge of DoD systems engineering and policies covering acquisition, manufacturing, fielding, sustainment, modernization, and disposal of weapons systems. It also requires experience with weapons-system Program Protection planning and microelectronics. Desired technical expertise includes integrated circuitry, standard processors, memory chips, and methods for reverse engineering electronic systems and integrated circuitry.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of relevant DoD work experience; experience may be waiverable with customer approval.
  • At least three years of experience in a SAP and/or SCI environment within the last five years; experience may be waiverable with customer approval.
  • BS and MS degrees in Electrical, Radar, Software, Microelectronics, or Computer Engineering; the master’s degree may be waiverable with customer approval.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI/SBPR).
  • Eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) and Special Access Programs (SAP) access.
  • Thorough understanding of the DoD systems engineering process and policies and procedures for acquisition, manufacturing, fielding, sustainment, modernization, and disposal of weapons systems and capabilities.
  • Specific experience in weapons-system Program Protection planning and microelectronics.
  • Engineering and scientific knowledge applicable to weapons-system manufacturing, operations, re-manufacturing, demilitarization, and oversight.
  • Technical writing skills for developing and maintaining Anti-Tamper Security Classification Guides.

Nice To Haves

  • Expertise in integrated circuitry, industry-standard processors, and memory chips.
  • Familiarity with methodologies for reverse engineering electronic systems and integrated circuitry.
  • Experience with Program Protection planning and implementation in weapons-system programs.
  • Experience evaluating fielded weapons systems for anti-tamper and reverse-engineering susceptibility based on vendor design.
  • Experience identifying the susceptibility of critical protected information to exploitation and reverse engineering.
  • Experience supporting development of industry and DoD standards to improve future weapons systems’ resistance to reverse-engineering exploitation.
  • Experience working with industry to assess tamper resistance of weapons systems within the acquisition development cycle.

Responsibilities

  • Support requirements identification, evaluation, testing, and integration, particularly for Program Protection planning and anti-tamper methodologies.
  • Support technology and product acquisitions, including long-term planning, request for proposal development, and technical oversight of ongoing projects.
  • Assess whether acquired capabilities meet system design requirements and specifications.
  • Identify technologies and evaluate system and subsystem design functions and improvements to protect Critical Program Information.
  • Develop plans to assess the security features of GOTS and COTS components for CPI susceptibility and vulnerability to exploitation and reverse engineering.
  • Work with DoD Anti-Tamper Evaluation Teams to understand current designs and identify vulnerabilities to foreign and adversary exploitation.
  • Assist efforts to improve anti-tamper and anti-exploitation design, development, manufacturing, training, and sustainment for U.S. weapons systems.
  • Teach modules in Anti-Tamper courses for industry and Government participants and assist with curriculum development and updates.
  • Translate user requirements into system requirements used to design, develop, fabricate, test, and evaluate systems, subsystems, and equipment.
  • Support and conduct engineering performance, effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, cost-performance, lifecycle-cost, producibility, maintainability, supportability, reliability, technical-risk, and schedule-risk assessments and trade-off studies.
  • Support and conduct systems analyses, including system design feasibility and state-of-the-art assessments.
  • Perform technical and mission analyses of existing and potential operational requirements; assist in developing system concepts and conduct technology and design trade-off assessments.
  • Provide systems and subsystems integration support for acquisition, development, and verification of systems and equipment.
  • Review system, system-segment, and equipment specifications, as well as program Interface Control Documents.
  • Assist with developing requirements and technology needs into action plans and policies to improve weapons-system manufacturing, operations, re-manufacturing, and demilitarization.
  • Apply engineering principles and technical subject-matter understanding to develop, revise, update, and maintain technical Anti-Tamper Security Classification Guides.
