System Safety Engineer

Overland AI•Seattle, WA

About The Position

Overland AI is hiring a Systems Safety Engineer for its Systems, Safety, and Test Engineering (SST) team. The role owns system safety for autonomous ground vehicles across the full lifecycle, from concept and requirements through integration, testing, and field operations. The engineer works closely with system-building teams while maintaining an independent perspective on risk. The work supports MIL-STD-882E safety programs, ATEC safety releases, and customer certifications across multiple concurrent programs. The role includes producing hazard analyses and safety requirements, tracking hazards and safety cases, supporting safety testing and readiness reviews, evaluating verification evidence, and preparing safety documentation for government, commercial, and other external reviewers. The engineer will also help scale safety processes and raise safety maturity across engineering. The position is located in Seattle, Washington. Compensation is $170,000–$225,000 annually, with actual base salary determined by job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience. The position may involve access to export-controlled technology, and employment is contingent on the ability to comply with U.S. export control laws.

  • Hands-on system safety engineering experience on complex systems such as autonomy, robotics, vehicles, aerospace, defense, or similar.
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882E or related standards such as JSSSEH, UL 4600, ISO 26262, and ISO 21448.
  • Experience producing safety artifacts for external review, such as Safety Assessment Reports.
  • Sound, independent engineering judgment on risk.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment with real hardware and field testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting ATEC or other DoD test and certification authorities.
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or semi-autonomous systems.
  • Experience with developmental and operational test readiness.
  • Familiarity with MBSE/SysML (e.g., Cameo), GSN safety cases, requirements tools (Jama, DOORS), and Jira.

Responsibilities

  • Perform hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, FMEA, FTA) per MIL-STD-882E, scaled to system maturity.
  • Analyze autonomy and software-controlled behaviors, ensuring software safety controls are captured, traced, and verified.
  • Define safety requirements and flow them into system and subsystem requirements.
  • Partner with internal teams to drive safety features to implementation.
  • Maintain hazard tracking and the system safety case, with traceability from hazard to mitigation to verification evidence.
  • Partner with test teams on safety test objectives and acceptance criteria, and participate in lab, vehicle, and field testing.
  • Evaluate verification evidence and support readiness reviews, safety releases, and risk acceptance decisions.
  • Prepare safety documentation for ATEC, government, and commercial reviewers, and communicate risk clearly to leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Help build safety processes that scale across programs and raise safety maturity across engineering.
