System Product Design Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA
•$207,190 - $225,300

About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a System Product Design Engineer in Cupertino, California, and various unanticipated locations throughout the USA. The role leads the end-to-end design and engineering integration of a complex iPhone subsystem, typically involving multiple customer-facing features. The engineer works across technical and operations disciplines and cross-functional teams to define engineering requirements and resolve design challenges involved in integrating key technologies into iPhone. The position involves designing, engineering, and validating concepts, parts, and solutions using 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX. It applies Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), statistical analysis and process control, tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing. The engineer collaborates with overseas manufacturers to ensure parts can be mass-produced; analyzes structural and functional robustness using finite element analysis and statistical tools; and applies mechanical and materials engineering principles to investigate failures, identify root causes, and develop production-ready solutions. The role also includes synthesizing complex design details and large datasets into visual summaries; conducting failure analysis using instruments such as industrial computational topographic x-ray scanners and scanning electron microscopes; creating technical drawings and test specifications for mechanical components, including GD&T, FAI/SPC, and ORT callouts; and developing analysis tools to assess new iPhone technologies. Domestic and international travel is required 10%. The position is 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.
  • Experience or education utilizing DFM, DFA, and statistical tolerance analysis techniques.
  • Experience or education using CAD software to design 3D models and engineering drawings with GD&T for phone parts.
  • Experience or education using FEA tools, including Ansys and Hyperworks, to perform structural and thermal analysis on mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Experience or education developing DFMEA and PFMEA to identify and mitigate design and process failure risks across mechanical systems.
  • Experience or education performing failure analysis for components undergoing reliability testing.
  • Experience or education working with electrical engineers to lay out and build custom PCBs.
  • Experience or education designing and integrating batteries to improve mobile-device battery performance.
