System Product Design Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA

About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a System Product Design Engineer to work in Cupertino, California, and various unanticipated locations throughout the USA. The role works across technical and operations disciplines and cross-functional teams to define engineering requirements and resolve design challenges involved in integrating key technologies into the iPhone. The engineer designs, engineers, and validates concepts, parts, and solutions using 3D CAD tools, including Siemens NX. The role applies design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles, statistical analysis, process control, tolerance and production-capability analysis, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing. It also involves working with overseas manufacturers to ensure parts can be mass-produced using metal, plastic, and brittle-component manufacturing processes. The position analyzes structural and functional design robustness using finite element analysis and statistical tools, develops material-based solutions for mass production across the product lifecycle, and conducts failure analysis and root-cause investigations. The engineer uses data from advanced instruments, including industrial computational topographic X-ray scanners and scanning electron microscopes, to identify causes and recommend corrective design changes. The role includes synthesizing large datasets and complex design details into visual summaries, leading end-to-end design and engineering integration of a complex iPhone subsystem, and creating mechanical technical drawings and testing specifications. International travel of 20% is required; the work schedule is 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience and/or education using 3D CAD software to design complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience and/or education creating technical drawings, including GD&T, using CAD software.
  • Experience and/or education applying structural analysis such as FEA to design parts.
  • Experience and/or education conducting failure analysis using mechanical and material principles to determine root cause.
  • Experience and/or education collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate key technologies into a product.
  • Experience and/or education integrating DFM and DFA into design work.
  • Experience and/or education using mechanics-of-materials engineering principles in design work.
