System Product Design Engineer

Apple•Cupertino, CA
•$207,673 - $277,600

About The Position

Apple Inc. is hiring a System Product Design Engineer to design, engineer, and validate concepts, parts, and solutions using 3D and 2D CAD tools. The role applies design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles, statistical analysis, process control, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing to develop parts suitable for mass production. It involves collaboration with overseas manufacturers and analysis of metal, plastic, brittle, composite, and other materials and manufacturing processes. The engineer assesses structural and functional robustness using finite element analysis, statistical tools, and simulation, and resolves design issues through failure analysis and root-cause investigation. The role also includes synthesizing complex design details and datasets into visual summaries, using advanced inspection and analysis instruments, preparing technical drawings and test specifications, and developing analysis tools to assess new technologies for iPhone. The position is based in Cupertino, California, and various unanticipated locations throughout the United States, requires 20% international travel, and is scheduled for 40 hours per week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience and/or education designing, engineering, and validating concepts, parts, and solutions using 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX and 2D CAD tools.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes for metal, plastic, and brittle components, and of assembly design and design-for-manufacturability assessments.
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards and proper drawing structure.
  • Experience analyzing the structural and functional robustness of complex electromechanical assemblies, including statistical tolerance analysis and finite element analysis.
  • Knowledge of simulation competencies including mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal/fluid, radio frequency, and modal/vibrational simulation.
  • Experience using failure-analysis techniques and data from advanced instruments such as industrial computational tomographic x-ray scanners (CT), scanning electron microscopes (SEM), x-ray diffraction (XRF), EDS, FTIR, optical measurement equipment (OMM), or contact measurement equipment (CMM).
  • Knowledge of materials and mechanics-of-materials engineering principles, including brittle materials such as glass, ceramics, and sapphire; composite materials such as carbon fiber and FR4; engineering plastics; metals; and adhesives.
  • Experience using 3D CAD software for component outline and construction, circuit routing/layout, and system integration/assembly.

Responsibilities

  • Design, engineer, and validate concepts, parts, and solutions using 3D CAD tools such as Siemens NX and 2D CAD tools.
  • Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly experience, statistical analysis, process control theory, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing to design work.
  • Collaborate with overseas manufacturers to ensure designed parts can be mass-produced.
  • Analyze structural and functional design robustness using finite element analysis and statistical tools and techniques.
  • Resolve issues and ensure designs meet requirements throughout their lifecycle by applying mechanical and materials engineering principles, conducting failure analysis, and determining root causes.
  • Use materials and mechanics-of-materials engineering principles to develop material-based solutions suitable for mass production.
  • Parse and synthesize large datasets and complex design details into visual summaries that communicate issues and proposed solutions.
  • Conduct failure analysis using data from advanced instruments, including industrial computational tomographic x-ray scanners and scanning electron microscopes, to determine root causes and corrective design changes.
  • Create technical drawings and test specifications for mechanical components, including GD&T, FAI/SPC, and ORT callouts.
  • Develop analysis tools to assess the performance of new technologies invented for iPhone.

Benefits

  • Opportunity to participate in discretionary employee stock programs, including discretionary restricted stock unit awards.
