About The Position

Responsible for moving trailers to and from unload and load doors and throughout the yard. The role may also include physically loading, unloading, and sorting packages by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and placing packages safely and efficiently. Switchers perform trailer moves, coordinate movements with management or central control, document moves, inspect switcher equipment, and follow yard-switching safety procedures. They may also perform package-handler duties, including scanning and sorting packages and moving them through the appropriate conveyor systems.

Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a Department of Transportation (DOT) file.
Ability to understand and follow instructions about work duties and safety methods.
Ability to discern numbers and information to sort packages correctly.
Ability to use basic tools and equipment such as skate wheel rollers, dock carts, handheld scanners, chutes, and unloading devices.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment.

Nice To Haves

Six months of experience as a package handler or switching/CDL operator experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Hook and move parked trailers between the yard and load/unload doors.
Coordinate trailer movements with management and/or central control.
Document trailer moves using the Yard Management System, where available, or switcher cards.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on switcher equipment.
Follow effective yard-switching safety processes and procedures.
Use hand-to-surface methods when handling packages.
Load and unload packages onto or from delivery vehicles, trailers, conveyor system carts, and load gratings.
Lift, carry, push, and pull packages continuously and repetitively for approximate shifts of two to four hours.
Scan packages, read labels and charts, verify numbers, and sort packages to the appropriate conveyor system.
Perform other duties as assigned.
