About The Position

The Switchboard (PBX) Operator is responsible for receiving and directing all incoming calls to the hospital, performing in-house paging, and managing emergency communication systems. This role ensures accurate and timely communication across the facility while maintaining updated records and supporting hospital operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Capability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

Responsibilities

  • Receives and routes incoming calls to appropriate departments, extensions, or patient rooms
  • Handles calls from in-house extensions and external callers
  • Manages all emergency calls, codes, and paging systems
  • Contacts appropriate personnel based on emergent or urgent needs
  • Performs intercom paging and provides general information to callers
  • Maintains updated switchboard files, including room numbers, admissions, and discharges
  • Keeps employee and on-call contact information current for disaster procedures
  • Contacts on-call personnel as requested, especially during evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Takes and relays messages via paging, beeper systems, or direct calls
  • Ensures all bulletin board information and disaster procedures are current
  • Remains knowledgeable of all updates related to switchboard operations
  • Operates switchboard system efficiently and accurately
  • Responds promptly to emergency communication needs
  • Maintains confidentiality and accuracy of all communications
  • Supports hospital-wide communication efforts
  • Performs other duties as assigned
