About The Position

The Swiss Machine Setup Operator is responsible for operating and setting up Swiss machines to produce parts within specifications. This role involves loading and unloading materials, deburring parts, performing daily maintenance and housekeeping, adjusting machine offsets, and troubleshooting issues. The operator will also be responsible for manual inspection of parts using various tools and operating a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Additionally, the role includes reading and interpreting blueprints, filling out quality documentation, and potentially training other employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to present numerical data effectively and write routine correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively to communicate with other employees.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as decimals, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to interpret bar and line graphs.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to identify problems in a timely manner and resolve or notify more senior employee.
  • Ability to work well in group situations.
  • Basic Computer skills.
  • Regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include Close vision and Depth perception.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational Technical High School or Community College Advanced Manufacturing Certificate graduate preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Multitasking machine set-up experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Operate Swiss machines, including loading material, unloading parts, and deburring.
  • Perform daily housekeeping and maintenance checks around the machine.
  • Adjust tool offsets and other machine offsets (e.g., fixture offsets, cutter compensation).
  • Set up jobs by installing and aligning fixtures, securing cutting tools, and downloading CNC programs.
  • Establish machining offsets (G54, etc.).
  • Monitor machine operation to detect malfunctions and ensure parts are within specification, making adjustments as needed.
  • Document results and obtain first-piece stamp.
  • Recognize and adjust for tool wear.
  • Identify and build tooling according to the tool sheet and establish tool heights.
  • Read CNC programs line-by-line to follow tool paths.
  • Perform manual inspection of parts using hand tools like vernier calipers, micrometers, and hard gages.
  • Use specialty inspection devices, such as vision systems.
  • Load parts onto the Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) and operate it to ensure parts are within specifications.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and quality plans.
  • Fill out Quality System paperwork and enter data into the computer.
  • Operate more than one machine at the same time, as required.
  • Train other employees on equipment operation.
  • Notify senior machining employees, engineers, or supervisors when problems arise.
