About The Position

Under the direction of the Aquatics Coordinator/Director and in accordance with the policies of the YMCA of Southwest Florida, the Swim Instructor provides swim lessons/ private or group to children and adults of all levels and abilities based on YMCA standards and program requirements.

Requirements

  • Successfully meet the Association’s policies on background screening
  • Proficiency of swimming strokes and the ability to instruct and demonstrate in a group or individual session
  • Ability to perform life-saving techniques if necessary
  • Ability to forge mutually respectful partnerships with persons served
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Must be a self-starter, with high energy and a positive attitude
  • Adhere to drug/alcohol/smoke-free workplace policy
  • Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques
  • Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
  • Employment is contingent upon completing required Level 2 background screening through the Florida Care Provider Background Screening Clearinghouse

Nice To Haves

  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer/ First Aid/AED Certifications
  • WSI and/or YMCA Swim Instructor certification or equivalent
  • Completion of the YMCA’s Blood Borne Pathogen’s training annually
  • Completion of the YMCA’s Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training annually
  • Staff Safety Requirements/Cleaning Protocols
  • Additional training classes as recommended by Supervisor

Responsibilities

  • Instructing all swim lesson participants
  • Ensuring the safety of participants in their class
  • Working scheduled hours, including starting and ending class on time, remaining after class to answer questions, and cleaning up supplies
  • Instructing and evaluating students participating in swim lessons
  • Submitting completed report cards, skills sheets, and attendance information on time
  • Attending mandatory meetings and training sessions
  • Acting immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of patrons in the event of an emergency
  • Presenting a professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintaining a high standard of customer service
  • Upholding all staff safety requirements including cleaning protocols throughout the day
  • Utilizing the time clock and monitoring timesheet, bringing any corrections to the supervisor in a timely manner
