About The Position

The YMCA is hiring Swim Instructors to teach group and private swimming lessons to children and other participants. The role is open to individuals age 15 and older; previous teaching experience is not required, and comprehensive training is provided. Instructors help participants meet their swim-skill goals while ensuring lessons follow YMCA curricula, policies, and safety practices. The posting describes Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 responsibilities, with higher levels adding teaching, mentoring, client-management, and staff-training duties. Part-time work requires at least 5 hours of lessons per week; full-time opportunities are also available. Level 3 instructors have higher minimum weekly hours during peak times.

Requirements

Be at least 15 years old.
Have experience with children and a passion for teaching children to swim.
Be able to pass American Red Cross CPR Certification.
Be able to complete an in-water skills assessment.
Maintain at least 5 hours per week of group and/or private lessons for Level 1 and Level 2 roles.
For Level 3, manage the stated minimum weekly lesson hours: 12 hours for part-time or 24 hours for full-time during peak times.

Responsibilities

Work with groups and individuals to help them achieve their swimming-skill goals.
Conduct lessons in accordance with YMCA internal lesson plans, curricula, and policies.
Set up and clean up lesson equipment.
Communicate with participants and their guardians about lesson progress and goals.
Ensure a safe, nurturing environment for students.
Collaborate with aquatics staff, lifeguards, and supervisors to support pool operations and programming.
Participate in staff training and in-service meetings.
At Level 1, support instructors teaching small groups, monitor participant safety and technique, and provide feedback and encouragement.
At Level 2, teach individuals or small groups, provide tailored one-on-one instruction, develop customized lesson plans, and maintain accurate scheduling for private and semi-private participants.
At Level 3, mentor new and Level 1 instructors, provide advanced swim instruction, manage a large book of clients and classes, and facilitate staff trainings.
