SVP, Technology Strategy & Operations

Axos Bank•San Diego, CA
•$185,000 - $225,000•Onsite

About The Position

Axos Bank is seeking a Senior Vice President of Technology Strategy & Operations to serve as the horizontal owner of technology delivery across seven verticals spanning Consumer Bank, Securities, and Enterprise Technology: Consumer Dev, Securities Dev, COE, Data, ABC Tech, Ops/Delivery, and Axos Universal Core. The role connects the verticals so they meet their objectives in alignment with one another, rather than building in isolation. It drives common delivery standards, continuous improvement and transformation—including an AI-driven development lifecycle (AIDLC)—and organizational change management. The SVP also takes direct operational ownership when programs go off track. The role oversees strategic initiatives, OKRs, and budget and resource allocation trade-offs across the portfolio. Although it includes coordinating execution across teams with different priorities and cadences, its primary mode is hands-on: personally leading major cross-vertical initiatives, diagnosing problems, making decisions, and staying involved until issues are resolved. Success is measured by programs turned around, standards adopted, and decisions made with full cross-vertical visibility. The position reports onsite to Axos Bank's headquarters in San Diego, California; remote work is not available. The role oversees technology delivery and workforce effectiveness across more than 500 resources. The stated annual target salary range is $185,000–$225,000, with eligibility for annual discretionary cash and restricted stock unit bonus targets of 15% each. These targets may be awarded semi-annually based on achievement of performance goals and targets.

Requirements

  • 10 or more years in technology leadership roles.
  • Direct, hands-on program or delivery management experience, including personally running or turning around technical programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose why technical initiatives are failing and directly correct the problems.
  • Experience running a formal organizational change management practice at scale in a large technology organization, such as ADKAR, Prosci, or equivalent.
  • Experience managing productivity and effectiveness for a large, complex technology organization, including capacity planning, utilization analysis, and organizational design.
  • Experience owning strategic portfolio execution and OKRs across multiple technology teams, with the ability to hold peer-level leaders accountable without direct line authority.
  • Direct experience implementing AI-driven development practices at scale, with demonstrated adoption and measurable productivity or quality impact.
  • Experience managing technology vendor relationships, including renewals, negotiations, and performance, in partnership with procurement.
  • Experience preparing materials for senior management or board-level reporting.
  • Ability to work onsite at the San Diego, California headquarters; remote work is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Financial services or other highly regulated industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in banking or capital-markets technology, particularly in organizations combining core banking, securities or clearing, and data platforms.
  • Experience leading delivery recovery or program rescue in a regulated environment.
  • Experience designing or rolling out an AI-driven development lifecycle across multiple engineering teams.
  • Formal certification or equivalent depth in organizational change management and/or workforce or organizational effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Own continuous transformation of technology delivery across all seven verticals, including planning discipline, quality gates, architecture review, and delivery reporting.
  • Define horizontal delivery standards and drive their operationalization, measurement, and reinforcement across verticals.
  • Implement an AI-driven development lifecycle across all seven verticals, embedding AI in planning, coding, testing, and delivery workflows.
  • Track AI adoption and its productivity and quality impact; intervene when adoption or impact is insufficient.
  • Monitor execution health across verticals, identify diverging practices and capability gaps, and drive improvements to address them.
  • Own organizational change management across Consumer Bank, Securities, and Enterprise Technology, and personally drive adoption of new standards and operating changes.
  • Measure change readiness and adoption for major cross-vertical initiatives and course-correct when adoption stalls.
  • Lead enterprise release management, including release sequencing and go/no-go decisions.
  • Partner with vertical engineering leaders on release readiness and risk sign-off, intervening on cross-vertical conflicts or platform-wide risk.
  • Directly manage a standing technical delivery and program management team assigned to cross-vertical priorities.
  • Provide hands-on delivery leadership for major cross-vertical technical initiatives.
  • Identify at-risk or failing programs, take operational ownership, diagnose root causes, and lead recovery through to successful delivery.
  • Build organizational practices for identifying delivery risk earlier.
  • Oversee productivity and effectiveness across the technology workforce, including utilization, capacity, span of control, and organizational design, and drive measurable improvements.
  • Establish consistent productivity and delivery-throughput metrics and benchmarks across verticals.
  • Directly drive workforce redeployment or rebalancing when staffing mix or skills are misaligned with workload.
  • Coordinate technology-owned vendor relationships across verticals, including renewals, negotiations, and performance management, in partnership with procurement.
  • Prepare formal delivery, resourcing, and vendor reporting for management and board-level audiences.
  • Own key delivery and engineering metrics, including DORA metrics, and guide BI performance reporting to reflect portfolio priorities.
  • Personally lead major cross-vertical strategic initiatives end-to-end; translate SVP-level strategy into shared plans for other initiatives and hold verticals accountable for execution.
  • Lead OKR alignment and management across all seven verticals, including setting cascading objectives, tracking progress, and intervening when OKRs are off track or misaligned.
  • Triage cross-vertical escalations and resource conflicts, resolving issues directly when possible and escalating others with options and recommendations.
  • Meet first-12-month success measures, including broad AIDLC and delivery-standard adoption, measurable delivery impact and workforce productivity improvements, reduced at-risk programs, improved release management, coherent and delivered cross-vertical OKRs, and trusted portfolio reporting.
