The Global Studies program is seeking an energetic graduate or fourth-year student to assist with grading and student advising for a core course in sustainability policy. This course surveys U.S. and international sustainability policy, covering topics such as air and water quality, endangered species protection, public land management, private land conservation, ocean plastic pollution, sustainable development, and Indigenous people’s rights. It examines the origins of these policies in broader conservation thought and evaluates them using current natural resource and environmental challenges like energy independence, biodiversity loss, recreational access, and climate change. Students will also learn about the actors and processes involved in environmental policy decisions, including Congress, agencies, interest groups, appropriations, oversight, rulemaking, and environmental assessments. Assignments are themed around current natural resource policy making, and guest speakers provide insights from environmental policymakers, analysts, and advocates. This course offers an excellent opportunity for students from any discipline to broaden their knowledge, particularly those in policy-related fields such as politics, foreign affairs, leadership & public policy, and economics.
