About The Position

The Sustainability Coordinator serves as Mammoth Disposal's primary resource for sustainability, environmental education, and state recycling mandate compliance throughout the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mono County, and Inyo County. This position works closely with local governments, schools, businesses, community organizations, and regulatory agencies to develop, implement, and support waste reduction, recycling, organics diversion, and sustainability programs. The Sustainability Coordinator represents Mammoth Disposal at community events, public meetings, and stakeholder engagements while helping ensure compliance with California recycling and sustainability regulations. This role requires a highly organized and self-motivated professional who can independently manage multiple projects, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and serve as an ambassador for sustainability initiatives throughout the communities we serve.

Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge of recycling, waste reduction, sustainability, environmental programs, or related fields
Experience coordinating projects, programs, events, or community outreach initiatives
Strong public speaking and presentation skills with the ability to engage audiences of varying sizes and backgrounds
Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with government agencies, businesses, schools, community organizations, and residents
Strong written communication skills, including report preparation, correspondence, and educational materials
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and projects simultaneously
Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and professional discretion
Valid driver's license and ability to travel throughout Mono and Inyo Counties as needed
Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
Experience with social media platforms and digital outreach tools preferred
Experience with grant reporting, data tracking, and program management tools preferred
Knowledge of Sustainability and waste reduction program development and implementation
Knowledge of Community engagement and public outreach strategies
Knowledge of California recycling and waste diversion regulations
Knowledge of Research, analysis, and program evaluation techniques
Knowledge of Public relations and stakeholder engagement
Knowledge of Grant administration and compliance reporting
Knowledge of General administrative and project management practices

Responsibilities

Lead and support sustainability programs, projects, and initiatives designed to reduce waste, increase recycling participation, and support greenhouse gas reduction efforts
Monitor California recycling and organics regulations and provide updates to the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Disposal, Bishop Waste, and other stakeholders
Attend CalRecycle workshops, webinars, trainings, and public meetings to stay current on regulatory developments
Coordinate outreach and education efforts related to state and local recycling mandates, including SB 1383 and other applicable regulations
Develop and deliver educational presentations, assemblies, and training programs for: Businesses and commercial customers, Schools and educational institutions, Community organizations, Public agencies and elected officials, Residents and community groups
Implement and support recycling and sustainability programs throughout Mammoth Unified School District and partner schools in Mono and Inyo Counties
Plan and participate in community outreach events, including Earth Day celebrations, Chamber of Commerce events, and other community engagement activities
Represent Mammoth Disposal at Town Council meetings, committee meetings, Chambers of Commerce, and community functions
Assist with administration and operation of the Buy Back Center, including employee training and recycling education initiatives
Partner with local governments and community organizations to develop and enhance sustainability-related policies, procedures, and programs
Conduct waste assessments and support Green Business Program initiatives in partnership with community organizations
Develop marketing and educational materials for social media platforms, websites, newsletters, and public outreach campaigns
Track, monitor, and report program performance metrics, compliance requirements, and sustainability initiatives
Research, prepare, and assist with grant applications and grant administration activities
Prepare reports, presentations, and correspondence related to sustainability programs and regulatory compliance
Coordinate with internal departments and external partners to ensure successful implementation of sustainability initiatives
Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned
