About The Position

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a Surveying Technician I - Rodman/Instrument Operator for their Winston-Salem, North Carolina Office. This role involves operating surveying instruments, taking field notes, making sketches, and entering data. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Ability to retain knowledge of daily routines and able apply logic and common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions
  • Ability to work in small groups
  • Ability to solve problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree preferred, Field of Study: Land Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management or similar degree type or relevant experience
  • Related experience
  • No prior experience necessary but preferred
  • May use Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD), accurate data entry skills, ability to operate and master various electronic devices and software programs as needed for surveying and mapping

Responsibilities

  • Position and hold the prism rods, or targets, that Instrument operators use for measure angles, distances, and elevations
  • Record survey measurements and descriptive data, using notes, drawings, sketches, and Data Collectors.
  • Run levels and level rods for benchmarks and cross-section elevations
  • Search for property monuments, and other survey points
  • Set and recover stakes, marks, and other monumentation
  • Operate surveying instruments such as prisms rods, Total Stations, and GPS equipment
  • Compile information necessary to stake projects for construction, using engineering plans
  • Maintain equipment and load supplies in vehicles used by surveying crews
  • Perform manual labor, such as cutting brush for line of sight, carrying stakes, rebar, and other heavy items, and stacking rods
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
