About The Position

We're hiring a Survey Crew Member - Assistant Engineering Technician or Engineering Technician (depending on the candidate's qualifications) for the Surveyor's Office that will work on projects in the field such as boundary surveys, maintenance of Public Land corners and In-Place Right-of-Way surveys. This position will require use of and proficiency with basic surveying instrumentation. The Hennepin County Surveyor's Office maintains and preserves the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) throughout Hennepin County. The office also provides surveying services for the county including the Department of Transportation, Examiner of Titles, Regional Railroad Authority, Property Services and Tax Forfeited Lands. This is a full-time, benefit earning position. This position is internally classified as either an Assistant Engineering Technician or Engineering Technician.

Requirements

  • For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
  • For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): Thirty (30) or more college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical courses.
  • For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): One year or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
  • For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): One year or more years of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications or developing and maintaining computerized information system applications.
  • For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I): A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II): Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
  • For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II): Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
  • For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II): Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
  • For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II): A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.

  • Using Leica, Trimble, or similar survey equipment such as GPS units, Total Stations, controllers/data collectors, etc.

  • Math functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry; and the ability to apply math functions to survey and mapping solutions.
  • CAD software programs; and the ability to sync with surveying field equipment to download/upload data and to perform routine and complex survey calculations and analysis.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams with minimal lead worker direction.
  • Ability to demonstrate the employee competencies.

Responsibilities

  • Research public records and assist in maintaining records of Public Land Survey corners.
  • Analyze field data and operate computer equipment.
  • Direct and check the work of technicians in lower-level job classes.
